well, you asked a hard question...
personally, i don't like the idea of rebooting, remake on the other hand, now you have some options.
the classic rct games, in that graphic style or close to it, but that's happening with parkitect
revolt is another good one.
sim city 2000, with roughly the same art style with ease of mobility so you can make a real city that looks wildly different and has a somewhat timeless appeal to it.
Im trying to think of other games that could stand a remake...
dwarf fortress kind of, at least by someone who knows how to make a ui and thats about it.
Yeah, forgot to give SimCity some love. I really , really loved Sim City 2000 (have the GOG version). Sim City 3000 was a decent version as well...but after that, it's just gone downhill.

Mech Warrior - Still to this day one of my favorite PC gaming experiences was this series. For the life of me, I can't figure out how this hasn't come back.
(Sorry if someone already said this!)
Nope, don't think anyone mentioned this one. *sigh* So many game genres that I've played or continue to play over the years, which (apparently like most of us here) makes it hard to pick. "There can be only one"? Only if you add "per genre" to that, LOL.
Although there's already MWO (which is essentially a reboot of MW3 & 4), & I've heard some group is working on a separate version that's "more faithful" to the tabletop RPG (i.e. like MW2).
In that vein, though, I have to add in the MechCommander series. It introduced the "slot" system used in MW3 & 4, but you got to control multiple lances of 'Mechs (up to an entire company of 12), & you could issue commands either individually or to the lances. *sigh* Adulthood sucks, too little time to spend playing games.
I really wanted MWO to be the answer I was looking for, but there are some problems.
-"Free" to Play - I worry about putting any money into the game because I know it will be designed to make me want to put in more. This format is fine for certain games, but I don't want to wait 2 years or put in obscene amounts of money to be able to build a big stable of mechs. I wish this was an up front purchase with all content available.
-Team Play Only - This means your ability to advance and get more stuff is directly dependent on getting on good teams that are randomly generated. Not only that, I actually like the single player missions in the old versions. Plus, that let's you unlock or acquire goods based on your own play (see above).
-I don't think this version did much to move the series forward. This game seemed somehow like a console to me, which is a big departure from the past. Back in the day, you new you were on a computer when playing MW4 as the experience was completely different (and better) than anything you got on a console. MWO seems like it should be on my PS4. It seems like there wasn't a lot time/money spent to really push hardware to its boundaries and redefine the series, like jumping from 1 to 2, or 2 to 3. Like you said, its basically a dressed up version of 3&4 minus single player content and a fixed price tag.
Ultimately, this game missed the mark for me. I am looking for a true reboot of the old series. A remake, or heaven forbid, MW5 wouldn't be bad either!
