I have a Toshiba Satellite A500 PSAM0C-00L006
with Realtek sound card PNP Device ID HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0272&SUBSYS_1179FF02&REV_1000\4&457AB5D&0&0001

There is no sound if playing youtube or mp3 however if volume keys on keyboard are pushed a sound can be heard so speakers work,

There is a red x next to the speaker symbol on the task bar. If cursor is placed over the speaker symbol the pop-up reads "Volume 0 Realtek High Definition Audio"

If right click the speaker symbol can get the following information:

Sound: 1) Speakers: High definition audio working 2) Realtek Digital Output: Realtek High Definition Audio not plugged in

Recording: 1) Microphone: Realtek High Definition Audio Working 2) Stereo Mix: Realtek High Definition Audio Disabled
CANNOT enable the stereo mix through the pop-up. Can select enable but doesn't do anything.

Open Volume Mixer: No audio device installed

Realtek audio driver was reinstalled from Toshiba site Driver c:\windows\system32\drivers\rtkvhd64.sys (6.0.1.6048, 2.17 MB (2,270,240 bytes), 03/10/2012 7:07 AM). Driver is reported to be working ok in device manager

It seems like there is a volume control driver that is missing or not configured but am stumped on how to proceed. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks
Laurie

Found a fix. Problem is due to a permissions problem. This website discusses a fix, which I was able to implement
