Looking to upgrade this laptop to breathe some new life into it. I was told that I could upgrade from the stock Sempron SI-42 to a Turion X2 Ultra Dual-Core ZM-87. I can get this processor for $15.00 currently, but I would like to know that it is indeed compatible before I purchase it. If this processor isn't compatible, is there one that can be recommended? I tried looking for CPU upgrade information in the manuals hosted on Toshiba's website, but there is no CPU upgrade information. It is socketed, though, and I have read on other sources on the internet that the computer can handle dual-core processors without issue.

ANY help or recommendations would be helpful. I am trying to fix up this old laptop for my niece so she can use it for her homework. Thanks in advance!

I don't see any dual core cpus with a 25w tdp, so your best bet is to try a 35w cpu.

Here is a list of all of the CPUs using the same s1g2 socket as the current CPU. All of these CPUs will fit into the toshibe, but i cannot find information on whether the toshibas cooler and motherboard can handle this better cpu. I would suspect that it will work.

The fastest upgrade option is the turion z88, which is slightly faster than the z87. Both shouldwork and will bump performance a bit.

I would suggest a good ssd and at least 4gb ram to make this laptop usable again.

I've got the SSD and the 4GB of memory (manual says it can handle 8GB, as well). the CPU is really the only limitation in terms of what her needs are. 512KB of cache on a single-core processor is just pitiful.

Thanks again for the reply! It's greatly appreciated!

I see that the Turion X2 Ultra Dual-Core ZM-80 has a TDP of 32w with 2MB of cache running at 2.1GHz. Would the 3 degree variation be worth the sacrifice of the clock speed of the ZM-88 that is running at 35w?

I'm noticing that I can't find the ZM-88 on eBay, so it looks to be between the ZM-87 or the ZM-80, depending on your feedback regarding the TDP vs clock speeds.
