Traceroute and ping work, but not browser

I have a strange problem. I have two computers, one desktop winXp connected wired to router and a laptop connected wireless to same router. The internet works fine on my laptop, i can browse and all, but not on my desktop.

On my desktop i can ping and traceroute google and other sites fine but when i try to log in msn or browse the net i get nothing :S i have tried system restore to yesterday when it was working, but that didn't work.

- the desktop was on a static ip yesterday when it was working, so i tried setting it to automatic, but it was not able to get one. Said "connected with limited connectivity"

- My laptop is on automatic ip/dns and everything works.

- I tired the winsock fix, but didn't work, i even did a reset on my wireless router.

Any help???

When you ping and trace, are you using the IPs or the DNS names? If the former, then it sounds like your DNS settings may be incorrect since you mentioned your setting a static IP.

In terms of not getting a dynamic IP, being XP, ensure that all your settings are set properly (both IP and DNS settings are set to auto and that your alternate config isn't set).

No need to do anything else to try to fix it.

When set to auto, go to the command prompt and do an ipconfig /all and report back what your dns servers are listed as.

i have a dlink router so it the default gateway and dns should be 192.168.0.1. At least thats what it is on my laptop.

i tried nslookup on google with a static ip and dns. It wouldnt work on automatic

I can ping and traceroute google public dns 8.8.8.8 but when i telnet google at port 80 it just goes to a black dos screen

Found 1 adware, didnt change anything :S i might just reformat. Also, i cannot see the desktop on the network even tho i can ping the ip and get a reply. I dont get why when setting the ip and dns to automatic it doesnt assign an ip address. Im really stumped

Wireless works so the problem is on your desktop - don't touch the router for this, you can uninstall your network card driver then reboot, windows will detect the network card or you can install it from your motherboard cd. Open the windows explorer then right click on Network>Properties>On Internet Protocol click on Properties, make sure to obtain the IP address automatically.

The network adapter config is saying that dhcp server is not enabled in your router for dynamic address ranging.that is the reason you are getting APIPA address(169.254.6.15 ).
Enable dhcp server on your router for using dynamic address instead of static.
