Trying to improve performance

I've been experiencing really terrible performance on Battlefield 3 and Diablo III recently, everything's on the lowest settings and I still get awful fps, sometimes in the 8-10 range. I've completely reinstalled windows 7 and have reduced all the OS' to maximize performance, updated all the drivers. 8 GB of DDR3. My processor's an I5-660 and my card is a GTX 550ti. Any recommendations would be grealty appreciated.

Drivers are all updated. My network's a home network with a linksys WRT110. Only computer connected to it is my own, occasionally an ipod touch or my girlfriend's cell phone. Also I ran 3d mark and all my scores, except for graphics, were way below what is expected for my hardware. Graphics were 2300+, physics was in the 1100 and the combined was barely above a thousand.

Looks like it is heat. CPU's running 65 C idle and over 100 when playing a game. Can't believe I didn't think to check myself. The CPU fan seems to be running fine. Should I try reapplying thermal paste or do I need an aftermarket heat sink? Thanks for all the help.

Modern CPU dont shutdown, they throttle back until temperatures gets back in acceptable range then ramp back up, etc

Cooler is prb not seated correctly. Might of moved, pin disengaged, etc

They throttle down and if temp does not go down they are set to shut down. Both throttle and shut down temps can be set in BIOS on modern boards.
