Is it okay to turn off fast startup?

My PC has been saying on reliability history that Windows didn’t shut down properly but I have done every diagnostic test possible and it is linked to fast startup.

Also, my PC recently starts selecting the widgets and weather bar when loading into Windows and the news flyover pops out. It’s quite frustrating.

I have turned off fast startup and none of those issues occur now.

Not sure if my Windows is corrupt?

i don't think it's corrupt, just that you need to be a touch more patient at start up for windows to finish doing whatever it is doing. there are tons of features it has to get up and running and it does take a bit longer than just showing you the desktop.

you can also disable/delete some of those widgets and other things if you are not actually using them. saves time and memory not having them start-up and stay running in the background.

Fast startup and fast boot are pretty much pointless nowadays with the SSDs that are so fast that the gain with fast startup is now insignificant.

But the problems you described are not normal. Could be a power issue, file corruption, or even a malware. I would suggest to run a Malwarebytes scan just in case, and also a dism and sfc /scannow. Do you have a good quality PSU with enough wattage for your system?

Oh and just in case, do you always shutdown and restart using the Windows startup menu? Never use the physical power button to do that.

Thanks, I do wait for the PC to load fully but it seems as though the weather widget is auto selected like someone tabbed it so the flyover opens automatically.

This doesn’t happen if I turn off fast startup.

Thank you, I’ve done DISM. Tested all components - SSD, RAM, PSU etc. and all come back fine.

Yes, I always shut it down using the start menu.

sounds like you got your answer :)

fast boot is not needed and if it solves an issue or 2 when you turn it off. well sounds like a no brainer to me.

FYI, Fast Startup loads an imagine of your last state when you shut it down; this can cause problems if changes were made that requires programs to reload it's files on the next start. One way to test if Fast Startup is causing issues is to use the Restart option. Restart bypasses Fast Startup, so it may take longer to boot (in this case reboot), but it loads all program files and makes any necessary changes, rather than use an image,.
