My current motherboard is one of the wonderful original sandy bridge 67 boards with sata issues which I unfortunately never got replaced. I did however purchase a z77 board to replace it two or three years ago, which has been sitting in the box untouched since I purchased it. This weekend I'd like to finally install it as I'm tired of two of my drives running off the 3gb/s sata ports and Windows 8.1 is in need of a reinstall.
But, is there any drawbacks to doing so? Apart from the potential wasted time if the board does not work, as I imagine it is well out of warranty. There's no degradation of sorts by the board just sitting on a shelf for a few years is there? I would like to continue using my 2600k if possible instead of scrapping it for a new processor and motherboard.
