@NezzyMighty Your putting too much faith in the government. They're a bunch of lying inept tools who haven't owned up to this even being a mistake; so I say it isn't. Say something is to stop child porn and you instantly have free reign. Even if they had taken down a bunch of bad websites I'm sure more would've just replaced them. Hell they should leave them up so they can log the IPs visiting them and try to make some arrests.

How about something better, go after people that put the sites up FIRST and THEN go after people accessing it.

Well, the problem of freedom (in internet and everywhere) is larger and more complex to start trolling every time anyone makes a mistake. I think they won't recognize the error, because in US that would mean 87000 guys going directly to court to ask for money...
Finally, I also think that freedom is somehow in danger. We are happily losing rights that costed blood and fight to our grandparents, because we have got to busy and egoist, and because of fear and media / opinion control. Is just incredible how much press-time we dedicate to useless matters and how much useful info rests undiscovered by the masses. But how they told in Ancient Rome: Bread and circus...

Actually, they should take control of the sites & leave them unchanged, then go after the people that frequent them. Shutting the site down just prompts these monsters to change tactics/habits and makes them harder to catch.

It seems an oppressive, totalitarian/authoritarian state is the natural state of human society. Anything else requires fighting for and even then doesn't last very long.

It's what Americans originally fled from for a fresh start and "freedom". This freedom didn't last forever.

Contrary to popular opinion, the government is entitled to make mistakes. In this case, the made a mistake, realized their mistake, and rectified the situation.

Nothing to see here. Move along.

I knew this was going to be full of anti-government ignorance.

We're suddenly a communist state because our government (which is made up of normal people) made a mistake while trying to shut down child porn websites?

I've always thought this country has had problems, only recently did I realize it was the citizens and not the politicians that are the problem.

step away from the soap boxes

it was a mistake, all people make those, not concerted effort to spoil peoples internet.

Someone not familiar with domains nixed the top level domain and took out lots of folks instead of the intended, simple as that, chill folks.

I think you are an over zealous dummy.
All pedophiles should be executed, not web sites taken down. Lets take the 911 down too by mistake. Is that all right with you?

@alidan
Health care run by government??? It would end up like the Post Office. You had to be born here to be so ignorant.

@ NezzyMighty

By your logic Nezzy, if Terrorists were holed up and had your family as hostages (minus you), it wouldn't matter that your kids were killed as collateral damage, as long as we got those bastard terrorists.

True it's apples to oranges, but it's the same logical concept. It's fine to punish the masses as long as we catch a few guilty people. What if the government decided just to cut off internet connections to entire blocks if there was a person uploading child porn and you happened to live on that block? Would you be “okay” with you losing your internet connection since it served a higher purpose of keeping a random pervert on your block off the internet?

I love how people against gov run healthcare always say "It will be like the post office." As if that is the best example of how government run agencies are.

Why not compare it to the US Military? You know, where I would still eaisly say we are the top player. Also, ask Canadians or Swiss how much they hate their public health care. I would guarantee you that by far the major majority would laugh you out of their country if you asked them to trade with ours.

I have to ask all the people who are saying "it was just a mistake, we all make them", what do you do when you make a mistake? Say, "Oops! Too bad!" Or do you do what a civil person does and apologize to those who were affected by your mistake? I suspect you apologize because you don't come across as ca;;ous self-centered people. You sound like you care.

Why isn't a government, that represents you to the world at large, expected to at least say, "To all who were mistakenly hurt, we're sorry we caused your clients and friends to think that you are a child pornographer."?

Where did you take the communist part? This is a police state, nothing to do with communism... Look at the UK if you want to know where this leads in 10 years and to George Orwell's 1984 to where it leads in 100+ years. Or, if we are lucky and avoid the worst pitfalls, it will look like Idiocracy!

TSA, Patriot act, ICE (self proclamed intarwebz police), warrant less wiretapping, proposed FBI warrant less digital wiretapping etc.

I never said that we were at that point. Just keep the possibility in mind. Fear mongering work both ways. Not only GOP/Fox -fear-> Sheeples. It should be educated* citizens -fear-> Government.

[citation][nom]cptnjarhead[/nom]@ NezzyMightyAhh, sooo the good of the many out way the good of the few? Many bad things have occurred in history by governments doing "what is best for the people"By the way i have two kids. One is in the army and the other is in high school."So what the mistake took down legitimate sites. So what some damage was done."Keep telling yourself that and when it happens to you, just remember that it was for the greater good.[/citation]

If you ran a business and this happened to your website, you would be singing a different song. Take this example. If the government had information that there was a pedifile in the stands at an NFL game, does that then give it the right to arrest or detain everyone in the crowd in an attempt to find that one person?
