@bison88: Yeah, except this was probably something they threw their entire team at for months. They were also most likely planning to reuse the same code in all of their games.

Problem is that now that a hack has been devised, the DRM will fall much, much faster in other games using the same scheme. If they wanted to stop pirates from cracking their games, they'd have to continuously invent more complex DRM which is of course unfeasible.

[citation][nom]Dkz[/nom]and on and on and on.... Piracy is on consoles too damn it, in matter of fact consoles games doesn't even need to be cracked to play, they modify the damn box and play fake copys of the games, downloaded ones, just like PC games.Cut the BS, there is less piracy on consoles coz there are less console gamers than on PC.[/citation]

Good point. You don't have to crack a console game, just mod the DVD rom and firmware. I've fixed dozens of Xbox 360 RROD consoles that have been modded to play *ahem* backed up games.

I will not buy it because the internet connection in our country is suck, I would not finish a part without being disconnected, so I would opt for the pirated version then.

I don't see how using a crack will really help. After all, you are still sending a signal to the company that you will buy DRMed junk and help them make a profit. In the end, the legitimate user is still loosing.

Also, while there may be upstanding honest cracks put out there, the risk of getting extra little surprised with your work-around are present. Even if nothing is immediately apparent, your system could become the equivalent to a member in a sleeper cell.

This warms my heart. May all DRM ultimately continue to fall. It's been years since I bought a game straight up without checking for draconian DRM and such on the web first, and since it's gotten so bad, I refuse to buy any game that relies on such measures. I am not completely 'innocent', I have in my many years picked up a few games free, but only a few, most of which were old and not on sale anymore when I got them.

DRM drove me away from being a constant purchaser of games, (well, that and the 'consolitis' that has plagued games for years, largely gone are the real sims, and tactical games with tons of micromanagement options). The worse their DRM 'schemes' got, (depositing rootkits to your drive, and the like), the more inclined I was to just refuse to buy. If a game had such protection and I wanted to play it bad enough, well...let's just say there's no way I'll buy it under such a restrictive envelope. Screw Ubisoft, and all other game companies who put the screws to legitimate customers just to protect a game. Can't believe those suits sitting on top of the Ubi heap cannot see this is actually losing them money on DRM costs, as well as by driving away legitimate purchasers. Smooth moves, idiots.

They must all have college degrees ordered from the back of Boy's Life scouts magazine or something...

This is not news not current anyways this games crack was out before game hot the shelf, what is big news about drm is that people that are buying Avatar on Blue-Ray the drm is so bad it won't play on any of my blu-ray players, its all over the boards just another case of drm gone bad.

Tom seems to have not posted anything about this yet.

[citation][nom]otacon72[/nom]"Ubisoft's DRM for Assassin's Creed II is Cracked"....until they released a *required* update to continue playing the game.[/citation]

How would that work? You could just refuse to download the update they cant force a update on a copy of the game that's not connected to there servers. I mean I don't condone hacking but at the same time company's are getting out of hand with DRM and to tell ya the truth its only a matter of time before a company like Ubisoft gets sued by someone with loads of money and nothing better to do. Cause your still buying the rights to a game and if you cant use that product because of something on the manufactures end that sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen. You can tell me Terms of service and all that crap but remember its a piece of paper a Judge has the final say on if its valid or not. Its kinda like buying a car you own the rights to said car but lets say one day out of the blue your car will not start you come to learn the manufacture uses some kinda crazy system that has to connect to there home office to start and its down just think of the up roar and lawsuits from that and the investigations.

I bought, played and finished this game with no issues at all. I think alot of people are assuming a bit to much. I don't agree with their methods, but it wasn't as intrusive to me as some of you are making it out to be. So they want to protect their stuff. Let them. Protest it by no buying the game, once sales fall, they will do something about it. Just a reminder though, the work that these guys put into the game (fantastic game) I don't blame them from wanting to protect it. Wish they had gone another way about it, but obviously this has pissed alot of people off. And I would say that 3/4 of pissed off people wouldn't have bought it, or added another requirment before buying, such as its to expensive. Excuses most of it. If people didn't thieve, they wouldn't put drm into it. I will no doubt get blasted for this, ah heck it. I paid for the game, I had no issues. I doubt most of you would either

ubisoft is obviously ridding this whole drm thing much harder than any other publisher out there. i do want to point that out to the a-holes that are talking bad about deveploers (i wont name any names but eys i include EVERY ONE of you that posted soem disparraging remark about developers) first of you are all total idiots and know absolutely nothing about the game industry , it is not developers that control rather or not DRM is put on a game , it is publishers that determine this. Granted ubisoft is a developer as well as a publisher , but i think with assassin creed 1 adn 2 they were just the publishers. secondly there is a grwoing number of developers that are angry over the Securom DRM adn others like it.

so in the future instead of showing every one how little you know about the game industry please consider the fact that publishers determine DRM not developers, before making your post.

in case youa re wondering I'm a game art design student, that is saying i wil be a developer when i finish school , not a publisher.

now on to my comment about this news tibit

i hoenstly think it is rather spiteful that these companies will put this drm on thier PC games and then turn around and admit that the PC is not a strong point in sales for them any way. first off thier schemes only hurt thier sales further. basically they are adding insult to injury. it's like they are saying

"hey you the smaller crowd, the minority , we are gonna bug the piss out of you if you try to play our game on your platform of choice. so you might as well buckle and go buy a console because until then we could care less about you or your miniscule dollars. Hell we even spent more on ensuring that you get bugged, than what this game will likely make off of you !"

seriously note how the strongest supporters of consoles are the companies that are hanging on to these horrible DRM schemes ( EA, Ubisoft, Atari) it's as if they are trying to get rid of PC's as a gaming platform.

DRM has always been a bane to the legitimate purchaser; I remember running Populous and MOO having to flip through the game manual to continue playing. I guess this means I can now buy ACII?... But then again Ubi might complain about me playing there game without having to run a 50' to my crappy router :\ Anyways sorry Ubi I love your games, but I hate your DRM, unless you are willing to pay for my internet access?

you sir obviously have poor reading comprehension or like to purposefully ignore the facts.

sure the game plays great for you , you have a solid internet connection obviously. but not every one , does these are the folks that are having beef with ubisoft over this gmae , then ther are the folks that like to paly games while on the go via thier gaming laptop, but oh wait can't do internet when you are in a car , train, buss, or plane. i'm glad and im sure every one else here is glad the game works for you flawlessly. but the exception proves the rule.

"A lock only keeps out a poor thief"

These companies need to realize that they exist only because we are willing to spend our money on their entertainment, all this DRM just gets in the way of that and will push people to just get the free, cracked copies.

Also, they REALLY need to stop bragging about their new, "uncrackable" solution to piracy; some may see that as a challenge.

They will never protect hacking. I mean they should accept the truth. So they end up wasting funds on DRM and they charge more on customer. They are no real developer, they are the profit bastard.

The worst part is that ubisoft would never require this for the xbox version. if piracy is so bad on the console why dont they require the internet connection for the xbox too. they just want to treat pc players like crap, well i am glad that skid row didnt take it.

demonhorde665, I think you skimped over the bit where I said I didn't agree with there methods. What I said was I understand why they would and don't blame them. I blame the pirates. Wouldn't need DRM if there were no pirates

[citation][nom]dannyaa[/nom]Am I the only one who thinks it is inappropriate to report on illegal cracking? I can see a semi-legitimate reason to post something like this (tech news regarding the uncrackable being cracked); on the flip side, it only promotes piracy by informing someone who may not otherwise know. It even gives the cracking group name for easy searching.[/citation]

Ubisoft promoted this pira...fix to their broken game, they've no one to blame for it but themselves.

Sorry, I know I will get downrated, but I have to disagree that the pirates are some kind of heroes. They are comitting an illegal act. The companies do have a right to make money on their games.

I don't like DRM either. But why is DRM needed?? Because of piracy.
If you hate DRM, blame the pirates, not the developers. If piracy did not exist, there would be no need for DRM.
