Uh oh...major malfunction

I've finally successfully installed my operating system after disabling everything I could in BIOS. My logic was that if it was a setting in BIOS, I could pinpoint it by installing OS, then turning on each setting one by one and seeing if system was stable. Well, the installation went fine, though it took forever because I had both levels of cache disabled. First step after getting the OS online was to turn level 1 of the cache back to enabled stats. Well, to my surprise, that seems to have hit the spot. It won't boot, but rather gives me errors upon trying to load Windows 98. When I turn it off, it can load again. Any helpful suggestions? Does this mean that the motherboard is a faulty one? Thanks a lot for the help.
