Unable to write to DVD with Pioneer DVR-108

I've been given a new DVR-108 drive and cannot write to a DVD disk either
DVD-R or DVD RW format. However I can write to a cd.

Neither Nero (OEM suite 1 which came with the drive) or Windows can burn
anything. I have never owned a CD or DVD writer before and I wonder if I've
missed something.

I am using Nero express 6 and windows XP (sp1).

Any advice would be welcome.

OK,
Did the software you are using come with the drive?
Since the Pioneer 108 is a very new recorder you should update it to the
newest version of Nero (ver 2.1.2.18) to make sure that it sees the drive as
one the software can use.
When you open Nero click on the website button to downoad the updates.
Also, what kind of DVD media are you using?

Sorry to sound stupid (I am reallly new to this) but how do I do this ?

When you open Nero click on the website button to downoad the updates.

I have just tried this but it unfortunately it hasn't helped.

>Also, what kind of DVD media are you using?

I have tried DVD-R 4x speed disks & DVD-RW (not sure of the speed of these)
neither worked and some CD-RW which worked.

I'm getting the feeling that your Pioneer is fine but you need to access the
portion of your Nero Express software that works to burn DVD's rather than
the CD-RW's.
When you open Nero Express look in the upper right hand corner of opening
screen. Look for a drop down box indicating what recorder you are using.
Click on it and make sure the Pioneer 108 DVD or whatever is showing rather
than the Pioneer CD-RW is listed. Nero seems to think any recorder that can
burn both CD-R's and DVD's are two distinct recorders so one recorder must
be chosen to use the software at a time.

I have tried this too. I have a feeling that the problem is with Nero
especially as I could write to a cd just fine so I think the drive itself is
ok.

Can you recommend any other freeware packages I could try to test this?
(preferably without adware).

You could actually try the full Nero package free for 30 days if you have a
DSL or cable connection, or T1 access.
The other most competitive software is made by Roxio Easy CD Creator.
Tobe be frank about this I've used Nero for several years and found it one
of the brighter pieces of software that does what it says very well. If you
can download the full program, which is Nero Burning ROM you should be
quickly able to discern whether or not the burner will work. If Roxio has
their software downloadable for a trial period you could also try that but
make every effort to remove Nero from your system before installing the
Roxio software. They traditionally have not been compatible with each other.

If it happens to be a 2.4X burner, browse around the manufacturers
site because I've read that some 2.4X burners fail to write correctly
without a certain update from the manufacturer, my dvd disks actually
say that on case in a warning message.
