The wife wants a faster computer. No games, just start up , internet, grandchild's vids and pics( she edits them), and 5 or 6 social networking sites that ALL have to be running at start up. She has an Amd 5000+ on a Biostar AMD2 Mcpgb-m2 mobo with a NF6100-430 chip set and 4gb ddr2-800 ram. I can get AMD 7850 AMD2+ chip cheap at Geeks.com. Will the AMD2 mobo work with the AMD2+ chip? I think it will and will save me bucks on mem/mobo upgrade. I will mildly oc this chip. Her vid card is a X1650 128 interface 250 mb ddr3.

There is no Mcpgb-m2, but there is an mcp6pb-m2+ or mcp6p-m2 so double check your motherboard model. Use CPU-Z and then search the BIOSTAR site for that motherboard.

If your motherboard support it you may need a BIOS upgrade first. Even so it's not much of an upgrade. The 7850 also runs pretty hot so you won't get too far in overclock it especially if you use the crappy stock cooler. Honestly the cooler they put on the 7750BE and 7850BE is only enough for their stock speeds and you should use an aftermarket cooler for any overclocking. Still if you get it around 3.3 (or 3.0 with the stock cooler) it should be a noticeable improvement over a stock 5000+. If you compare it to a 5000+ @ 3.1 Ghz you probably won't find the difference worth...

Tried the Biostar cpu support list and got AMD2 but it is an old mobo and the page may not have been up-dated to AMD2+ I know that the pins are the same (940 micro PGA), but that the speeds are different. AMD2+ supports ddr2. Is a ssd cost effective given the age of the chip, mobo, and ddr2? I know little about ssds but am not afraid to overclock a chip.
