I have reached the point where I must upgrade my Dell, but I have been told the motherboard mounting configuration is proprietary. Is this true. If so, what are my options for finding the board I need. My PC is a Dimension 8200

If your system is out of warranty, I recommend getting a new antec case and changing to the athlon 64 socket 939. If you have the skills to change boards, you should have no trouble moving the rest of your components over to a new case. The new case will give you the option of choosing virtually any atx board you like. If you're not overclocking, a quality power supply in the 350-400 watt range will be enough for your new athlon. Microsoft is on track to release the 64 bit version of windows xp this year, so you'll be ready when it hits the streets.
