Upgrade from AMD Phenom II x6 1090T BE to Intel i5 3570K

I feel my 1090T is not the best for gaming and all I do on my desktop is gaming. Would going from an AMD Phenom II x6 1090T BE to an Intel i5 3570k be worth it? Would there be a big performance increase?

IMO, no, I don't think you would feel too much of a performance difference upgrading. You may get a slight boost in FPS, however, it wouldn't pay off the amount of money it takes to upgrade your entire platform.

Have you OC'd you 1090T? They're still a very modest chip that are still VERY capable of doing many things today.

My 1090T is currently OC'd to 3.86 Ghz. Anything over results in crashes. Also, the fact that it is 6 cores really puts me back in gaming.

I suppose that could be a small factor in your gaming experience as games still tend to utilise only 2-3 cores.

What games are your currently playing that you find your FPS to be unsatisfactory on? Also, what resolution and GPU do you currently have/play on?

The games I mainly play are BF3, D3, WoW, Skyrim and Crysis 2. I play at 1920x1080 with an Asus GTX 670 DCUII. I feel like my rig should be able to handle these games at max graphic settings with a minimum of 60 fps but it doesn't.

You can clearly see that the 2500k (5-7% slower than 3570k) clearly smashes the 1090T @ stock on every test. Considering 3570k's can still be OC'd to insane frequencies, well, must I say more?

As for your 3570k making up for the total cost in terms of performance, I don't know, but you would be very happy with your purchase regardless :lol:

Those benchmarks are on an i7 2600K though. I think my CPU is bottlenecking my GPU.

Not an ounce of difference between an i7 2600k and an i5 2500k in terms of gaming Hyperthreading has no benefits!

And yes, I would think your CPU is bottlenecking the 670 slightly as well.

Ever tried disabling 2 cores in the BIOS, and cranking the clock speeds on your 1090 a bit more higher?
By making it a quad core, your probably will be able to achieve atleast 10% higher clocks

I wouldn't recommend upgrading at this time, the minor increase in FPS u'll get won't justify the cost incurred. You should happily be able to keep the same chip atleast till the Haswell/SteamRoller generation comes by

What you actually want to do is to enable only one core and see how high it clocks at stock voltage.

Do this test for each core and write down the highest speed each core was able to reach.

Then disable the slowest core, or slowest two cores if the slowest two are close.

Not all 6 cores will clock the same of course, so if you are going to disable cores, it makes sense to disable the slowest ones.

I disabled cores 5 and 6 and was able to increase my overclock from 3.85 to 4.05 Ghz.

BF3 settings Ultra presets, 4xMSAA, 8xAF, HBAO and all effect set to full and the resolution is set at 1920x1080P

You have a setting problem

Jumping to a 3960X gives you a grand whoping total of 94FPS at a $850 differential...I don't know where you want to upgrade to and what is massive. Yes a i5 3570 is faster but its not earth shattering.

edit: 3960X was overclocked, at stock 90FPS around 1 more frame than the 3770 and 2700/2600......so as you can see upgrading is not always going to be a correct choice, particularly where games are GPU bound.

PS:- If u test each individual cores max frequency, and disable the 2 weakest like need4Speed said, you may get a few 100 MHz higher, try it out in your free time

I had got same processor as you and upgraded to intel i5 3570k... i get freaking huge diffirent... my ram processing speed is increased really much and system reponsivenes is much faster than in amd platform.
and insome lown end games fps improves much more. i mean there is huge diffirent between them and i recomend to upgrade if you are serious gamer but if not then i quess you just have to wait coming haswell or something.

intel i5 is oced to 4.7ghz on air...with noctua nh d14 with custom fans 120 cfm x2.

i just did this exact upgrade and got a huge performance increase maybe it was a mobo bottleneck but i saw a huge increase in performace
