I'm currently using an Asus M49AGTD Pro USB 3 motherboard and my stock 1090T Thuban, Corsair Dominator 4x2gb 1600, GTX670.

I do alot of rendering, pic editing and I know this CPU is decent, I'm thinking maybe a Crosshair V could utilize more of the RAM and CPU but that part I don't know.

Could a newer CPU be used in this board or am I just basically at my physical limit? Could I use a 8320
On this board or would I need a more modern board?

Main reason is speed is always better and with prices being reasonable I'm researching options.

I believe the 1090T is AM3 or at least compatible...been awhile.

Feel free to help out. Would like to keep the MB and CPU budget under $300 but a little over could be worked.

Thanks.

I forgot to mention I had paired the 4790K with the H97 only because I couldn't get a bundle price on the 4790 non-k. I think a 4790 with the H97 is perfect but the 4790K obviously would be a better cpu but the question is do I really need a $150 MB. Does Gigabyte or someone offer a good Z97 board with at least 6 SATA ports, preferably 8 for around $100?

I'm partial to Asus but could look elsewhere.....just I don't know who has reliable boards.

I understand going with the 4790K that a good OC board would be a wise choice but I prob won't OC until I need aftermarket coolers and such.

You can pretty well trust any of the H97 or Z97 boards for quality. I prefer MSI because I'm a sucker for the dragon design :)

But yeah if getting the K, definitely get the Z97 instead of the H97. You can always add aftermarket cooler and stuff later if you get the itch to OC. It's really not difficult and all of us can help you with that.

If you get the Xeon or i7 (non K), just get the H97 since it won't matter.

Are you 100% sure you don't want to get the i7-5820K instead? I would be so tempted if I were in your shoes.

For video production, you need lots of fast CPU c ores, lots of fast ram, lots of cuda cores/streaming processors (for Hardware Acceleration enabled software), lots of storage (for raw videos).

If you're into this in a big way, you should look at 6 or even 8 core Intel CPUs.

damric....Yes...I'm sure I want the 5820.... :) And it would be more ideal for my needs but I need to keep a budget on this for now. I7....I think I may upgrade later after prices come down but my current rendering tasks rarely exceed 30 min in length and there are minimal effects so monster horsepower is always welcome but I think the 4790 should fit the bill for awhile....hopefully anyway.

So I went down to MC tonight and pondered some boards and finally decided on one. The salesman was knowledgeable and did recommend as well as you have been, the Z97 architecture for the K chip. They had a good price on the ASRock Z97 Extreme4 and I was able to get both components for just under $400 including tax. Just holding both the Asus H97 and the Gigabyte Z97 HD3, the ASRock really won me over.....even matches my 1600 Dominator. :)

I will get it running in the morning and report back. My 850Pro SSD arrived today also so I'm really looking forward to this.....I greatly appreciate all the help and the push for the Z97 board.

Before I get everything unboxed, I have read a lot of reviews on this extreme 4 MB and within the last 4 months....many, many owners have experienced the same issues of the MB just quitting on them. I didn't really have time to browse the internet while I was deciding but I may rethink this slightly before I unbox it...kinda gives me cold feet.

I'll wait for more input but I think I will fork out the extra $10 and go with the ASUS Z97-K/CSM LGA 1150. Unless the issues with the ASRock extreme4 are isolated but my gut is telling me otherwise.

I did read up on the Extreme 4 a little more this morning and it seems based on the small number of fails, that they are isolated incidents. Some reported that the serial numbers ranging from 45 to 48 had issues but not confirmed, some with serials beginning with 49 had some issues. Mine starts with 51 so hopefully any bugs have been worked out. I think I will go ahead and install it since I do agree with you i7, that ASRock is dependable.

Damric, yes..this 1090T has been very trustworthy....never a hiccup.

Everything is up and running, I haven't been into the BIOS yet except to select the boot drive. I did run CPU-Z and my memory is running dual channel but at 1333 and it's 1600 Dominator. I figure I would address that first but so far so good.

I appreciate all the feedback, the end result is the ASRock Z97 Extreme 4 and the i7 4790K. Also going with the Samsung 850 EVO 256 GB this setup is extremely fast..never saw speed like this with my 1090T while it's a very capable CPU.

Everything runs very smooth with little or no lag, this is running at stock settings.... worth every penny IMO.
