Question Upgrade or wait for AM6?

Hi just want to pick some peoples brains on tech choices

Current System

i59600k
MSI z390m
16GB Patriot viper 3200 C16
GTX 1070 8gb

Looking to upgrade GPU (maybe 9000 or 5000 series after independant benchmarks) but after that. Should I bother with something on AM5? or just wait for AM6 and just run an overclock till then?

I am wondering if I can still squeeze some years out this old system with just a new GPU and maybe some more RAM, even with a possible CPU bottleneck? also aware that the new Intel cards don’t pair will with an old CPU like the 9600k

AMD have stated that the AM5 platform will be as long as, if not longer than, the AM4platform in terms of support.

I'd invest on the AM5 platform with the 9000 series processors but invest with a B850 chipset board. Out of curiosity, why do you need to upgrade?

include the age of the PSU apart from it's make and model. BIOS version for your motherboard at this moment of time.

AM5 is supposed to be supported through 2027 so I’d say even if you wanted to be cheaper and went with a b650 board and a 7000 series cpu you’d see a nice uplift from your current setup but then you’d have the ability to update the bios later and drop in a faster cpu. I’ve got a 7600x3d which was a bit of a Microcenter style exclusive, and a b650 board and it’s a great setup.

The other part is your gpu. Start with what the person above said so you can figure out the best route forward.

First, try this simple test:
Run YOUR games, but lower your resolution and eye candy.
This makes the graphics card loaf a bit.
If your FPS increases, it indicates that your cpu is strong enough to drive a better graphics configuration.
If your FPS stays the same, you are likely more cpu limited.
If your limiting factor is the cpu, then you have no effective upgrade using your motherboard.

If you have a need to upgrade now, and the budget to do so, buy now.
If you wait , you will wait for the next best thing you will wait forever.
At any price point, amd and Intel offerings are comparable.
The amd X3D offerings are good for gaming, but not as effective as their base chips for anything else.

Current system:
CPU:Intel i5 9600k
CPU cooler: Artic alpine (forget the model) similer to old stockintel cooler looking to get a tower cooler once they back in stock as even at stock speed theres some temp issues in some benchmarks/games when turboing to +4.x GHz
Motherboard:MSI z390m gaming edge AC
Ram: 16GB 2x8 Patrior viper (might upgrade to 32GB) but not massively needed
SSD/HDD: Corsair MP600 NVME 2TB (limted to pcie gen 3 speeds due to motherboard)
GPU: Zotak Nvidia GTX 1070 8GB want to upgrade once new gpu benchmarks for amd and nvidia come out
PSU: prob 10 year old OCZ psu think its 650 or 750 watt needs upgrade for newer gpu
Chassis: ThemalTake Level 20 VT
OS: Windows 10
Monitor: Dell 60hz 1920 x 1200 may upgrade to something modern wtih higher refresh rate not sure if i care enough about 1440p or 4K yet

Upgrade path i would like to do is CPU cooler GPU and PSU and then save some more money for a 9000 series 9800x3d maybe on AM5 or hold out til late 2026/2027 forsomething AM6 depending if I can squeeze some performance with an overclock out of the 9600k and put up with the bottleneck till then

My last upgrade jump was i7 950first gen to i5 9600k 9th gen with the 1070

Main reason to upgrade is I cant play some games at the graphics quallity level I would like with Kingdom come deliverance or red dead redemption 2 without framerate or heat issues
and it would be nice to be able try out other more demanding games
