Upgrade or whole new system for gaming at 144hz (GSync)

I'm looking to upgrade my current main gaming pc. I have an i7 4790k and 980ti with a 60hz 1440p monitor. The monitor is pretty ordinary and suffers major ghosting, especially in darker scenes.

I really want to upgrade to a 1080ti and a good monitor. Say a predator with GSync, 1440p, 144hz.

I'm told my CPU will seriously hold back the 1080ti especially on a 144hz monitor. Is this true? Won't Gsync help?

My budget is just enough so I could build a whole new System but I'd have to stick with my current monitor, something I really don't want to do.

Any help would be appreciated.

EDIT: The monitor I was looking at is actually 3440x1440 100hz Gsync. After more research it seems a 1080ti will hit its limits well before the i7 4790k will, at this resolution anyway. I'm going for the Upgrade and Monitor.

The CPU will limit the maximum FPS you can get with that 1080TI.
And will cause stutters. Perhaps Gsync can help with the stutters, but your maximum FPS will not be where it should be.
In other words, you may fail to reach those 144 FPS.

Yeah I understsnd I'm unlikely to get near 144fps with an i74790k or even the 1080ti (at 1440p) for that matter. This is why I was opting for a G-Sync display.

Everything I read says it will all but eliminate stutters providing your FPS is above 45 or so which that System would have no issues with at 1440p.

Guess I need clarification on that.

Don't want to buy a $1200AUD monitor to get stuttering.
