Hey guys,

I was looking for some recommendations on upgrading my current PC

I now have the below:
Zotac GTX 970
Team Elite 8 GB RAM DDR4 2444
I5-6500
MSI H-170 Gaming M3
EVGA Supernova G3 750 W

I'm mostly gaming on 1080p - 60Hz Samsung monitor - although I occasionally switch to my Samsung 4k Smart TV ( I could still play on 1080p or 4K of course)
I'm definitely upgrading with another RAM + one GPU of the following:

RX 5700
RX 5700 XT
RTX 2060 Super

Also, is it worth going up from my current I5-6500 to I5-9400F? will it impact FPS that much or bottleneck the GPUs mentioned above?

Solution
It might be a good idea to use a tool to graph CPU/RAM/GPU usage during play of each of those games. See if there's a tendency to max out either the CPU, or GPU, or both.

The answer is likely to be different for each game. I know a lot of people mention using HWInfo, and MSI's Afterburner, to do this kind of tracking. I haven't used either one personally, though.

At 1080p 60Hz, there's no real point in getting those video cards. You'd be paying for a lot of extra GPU horsepower that you can't make use of. In fact, your GTX 970 should still handle that pretty well, as it's about on par with a GTX 1060 / RX 570 or 580.

To be honest, I don't really wanna upgrade anything more than the GPU & the ram
and i chose the previously mentioned GPUs because I wanted something a little more future proof to guarantee that i'll stay on 60 fps or more on ultra settings for games within the next 2-3 years or so ...

Also, I can't provide a budget limit because i'm in Egypt and prices are very different (more expensive).
I could order from amazon but unless i get more than one piece, it won't be worth it due to customs cost (around 70 $)
Speaking of prices ... do you think the new CPUs & GPUs recently released this year will be included in the next Black Friday?

True. I guess the question becomes: what's expected from the upgrade? What's falling short currently?

I can't play all games at max settings.
I have to customize the settings to what would make them preform well without being laggy or unprocessed images (green screen - headless character, etc)

That seems like a good idea ... Although I'm afraid it might confuse me more 😂

Hey ... another question
I just saw a used 1080 TI (Aorus xtreme) offered @ what's worth in USD 491.43 while the new Asus Rog Strix 5700 XT is almost worth 522.15 USD in Egypt
So ... if i'm picking between them, which is better (performance & future proof wise)?

Path of exile & Guild of wars 2
Shadow of the tomb raider
Battlefield V
Anthem
Fps drops to 40s, 36 at worst

I would say your CPU is probably the bigger issue here, for some of those titles, at the very least. Guild Wars 2 is very cpu heavy. It is even worse, than WoW, in that regard. It can run on almost anything, but doesn't run well on anything. Shadow of the tomb raider, and Battlefield V really should be run on an i7/i9 or Ryzen 5/7 class CPU. Shadow of the tomb raider, for instance, can easily use 75% of the available 12 threads, of an R5 3600. BFV, in multiplayer maps is core/thread heavy too. A pure quad core simply doesn't cut it, for those 2 titles. My earlier recommendations of the R5 3600, or i7 8700k, if you really want to stick with Intel, still stand. The GPU is still capable of medium/high 1080p, 60hz gaming. I would probably choose the Strix 5700xt, just for warranty alone. Also, AMD will continue to do driver improvements, on that card, as it is new. AMD's cards tend to age, like a fine wine, due to driver optimizations, over the course of the GPU's lifespan. The 1080ti will most likely not get such a level of support.

For a difference of around USD$30, I would say go with the new 5700XT. The new card will have the full warranty, whereas the used card I don't think will have a warranty, and you can't be certain if it was used normally, used continuously for mining, etc.
