Upgrading a video card HELP?

Hi,

I am upgrading an IBM intellistation ePRo 6893-92U that has an AGP video
card with 16 mb RAM. I got a new replacement AGP card with 64 mb RAM. (I am
posting here because this is a more active forum).

The problem is that they are physically different in size. The new card
has the familiar long & narrow silver heel to fit most computer cases. It
looks much like every other sound card, modem card, network card.

The old card has a short and wide silver heel, and fits precisely into an
opening on the back of the case that matches it.

1) Can I make this new card "fit" in this IBM model?

2) If not, how can I find what cards are compatible before I buy again?

Thanks for your help.

The card in the IBM Intellistation ePRo uses a mounting bracket called NLX. All
the other phyiscal characteristics of the card are the same as any other AGP
card. Given the age of the computer, any replacement card must also be capable
of running at 3.3v. Some newer AGP cards operate at only 1.5v.

If the monitor connector lines up EXACTLY between an NLX AGP card and a standard
card, the mounting brackets may be switched. NLX cards were made for a few name
brand manufacturers which used them, including IBM, Gateway, and Compaq. OEM
manufacturers of NLX cards include ATI, Matrox, Elsa (now defunct), and
S3/Number Nine (likewise history).

If you cannot switch the mounting brackets between the cards you have now, I
would suggest buying an NLX card on eBay. Parts houses charge a small fortune
for them. Dealers do not sell them. They are no longer made. The NLX standard
lasted more or less through the Pentium II and Pentium III era, and was used
mostly for small form factor computer cases.

I have a few NLX cards here, and a few more which can be converted to NLX, but
none which have 64MB of memory... Ben Myers

Thank you very much for your thoughtful and helpful reply. Off to eBay!

At this point, I would be happy with a 32mb card. Do you have a 32mb card
with the NLX configuration that you'd sell or swap for an Apollo 64mb card
with the conventional slot design?

I have two ATI Rage Fury cards with 32MB memory. They have conventional
brackets, but I also have ATI cards with NLX brackets and exact physical
positioning of the monitor connector. In other words, ATI made them to be used
with either bracket, and it takes me a minute or two to switch brackets between
cards.

What is the chipset on the Apollo card? If it's a SiS chipset (Apollo uses some
SiS), I have no interest. If it's one of the NVidia chips, I'm willing to do a
swap. I deal in computer equipment, selling some bits and pieces via the
newsgroups, and occasionally on eBay. I suggest that we take this offline from
the newsgroup... Ben Myers

Ben,

The email address shown for me here (vcupdate @ yahoo) has expired. I tried
your "spam me not" address but my message bounced.
Would you please email me at spamandeggs @ comcast.net (remove all
the spaces in the address)

Thanks!
Marty
