Upgrading from 380 > 580. Want to make sure it'll work before purchase

Hi gang,

I'm looking to upgrade my system over black friday, I'm planning on replacing my 380 with a 580 8gb and 16GB of DDR4 ram and just wanted confirmation that everything should work before I pull the trigger. I have checked my PSU and have 2 8pins so I should be covered for any version of the 580 and according to my motherboard manual I shouldn't go any higher than 2400MHz RAM. Just wanted to check if there was anything I may have missed before I spend the cash.

Thanks

Solution
*Should* work, yes.
The PSU isn't the greatest - but the 580 is slightly less demanding than the 380.

Generally speaking though, modern/relevant GPUs and memory don't tend to go on sale for BF - it's used to clear out old stock.

Storage, PSUs, cases etc - those are the types of things you can typically expect to see on sale.

Thanks for the reply. Didn't realise GPU's aren't usually a part of black friday, wondering if I should wait for the actual black friday/cyber monday or just pull the trigger now, I'm not sure what kind of impact the 590 announcement will have on pricing

There might be little sales, 20quid off things like that, but don't expect to see substantial sales on modern GPUs - especially given the pricing overall on RX cards have come down quite a bit already. That doesn't leave much margin for the retailers, nor are they in any rush to clear out this stock.

The 590 announcement.... who knows how that'll impact the current lineup of cards. I can't imagine it'll have much of an impact on AMD cards at all, honestly. Might force Nvidia's hand a little bit to compete on price, but AMD are already moving 570s and 580s pretty cheaply to begin with....

Which i5?

Assuming an older quad-core? At 1080p, in some titles, there may be a little bit of limiting - but with a 580 it'll be negligible
As for 1440p, similar answer. As you crank up resolution though, you move more to the GPU, lessening the load on the CPU - and it should be fine at 1440p.
