Upgrading from 4GB PC-6400 to 8GB PC-8500 on a P35 Mobo w/ Q6600 cpu

Am I going to notice a huge difference or should I just save the dough and upgrade my mobo and cpu next year?

What do you guys think?

Save your money. Overclock your cpu if you haven't tried it yet.

I've got it at 3.2 on air. Cpu/Mobo are running between 32c and 38c (28 to 34 before the OC). I'm pleased with how she's running. Just curious if the move from 6400 to 8500 and 4 to 8gb would make a noticeable difference. It would likely cost around $30 when all is said and done and I've sold it all on ebay in a year or so.

I went from a dual e8500 to a Q9550 and noticed a huge difference with games that made use of multiple cores, ie: BF Bad Company 2, Some others.

For that jump it made sense, And its not even over clocked. I found the dual core would stutter the gameplay and it was frustrating, so i said heck with it.

I purchased the Q9550 new before it was discontinued for 280. Looking back i could have probably got a AMD 6 core - T1090 and AM3 Motherboard for probably 300ish. The 6 core i mentioned is virtually the same as my Q9550, which is a solid chip. I chose the lazy route.

IMO, worth the upgrade to a available quad.

I appreciate the advice but I was inquiring about upgrading from 4GB of PC2-6400 RAM to 8GB of PC2-8500 RAM 😉

It's a cost issue. Might be just as cheap to get a low end g41 or g43 board and a kit of 8 gb ddr3 to go with it. The 8 gb kits are going for only $30-35 and the boards for $45 at some locals. Then you could transfer the ram over to your next board. It also depends on your current windows installation. Oem windows for dell, hp, etc frequently only work with the original motherboard, requiring a new coa for a board change. And you probably know that 32 bit windows won't utilize more than 3.25 gb of ram anyway.
