Upgrading from a celeron 2.4 ghz

hello i am trying to help my mother upgrade her cpu, she has a celeron 2.4 ghz single core and it is painfully slow. and cant handle youtube without massive lags, yet she still usses it... i cannot find in system what her cpu is exactly it will say 2.4 ghz celeron. the problem is that inetel makes celeron across multiple socket sizes. so no help there, then i tried to figure out what cpu her mobo supported except i cannot find anywhere what the actual identifying marks of the mobo are, i wrote down every code on a sticker i could find and have come up empty handed. any ideas on how to find my socket without removing the cpu and inspecting?

Well if you are planning on swapping it out then you're going to have to remove it anyway. What kind of machine is it? HP, Dell, Acer? Custom built?

i think i found it. i went into bios and found i have 128 kb l2 cache on it
with that i did a proccess of elimination and found it has to be this cpu

Otherwise, if your cpu is THAT old. You should just buy a new motherboard and cpu regardless. Upgrading to a different better celeron in that nm node wouldn't be much better.

Download CPU-z and see what it says. It will tell you pretty much everything including your CPU model, CPU speed, motherboard model, motherboard socket, Ram type and Ram speed.

yeah no that i see i have to find a 478 socket cpu it is quite depressing, i know she wouldnt want a whole new mobo also because she thinks its fine how it is now, just is waaay behind the curve and doesnt mind. i do see they made dual core celeron d processors upto 3.3 ghz so i think i can find something (probably used) to get more juice for as little $ as i can

Is the latest in that family.. Although maybe if you updated your motherboard bios you could support a different cpu?

so i found that socket 478 can have different suffix's the one that i have is

PPGA478

and i am looking at one with Socket 478 (mPGA478b)
will they be compatible?

if it is the latest in the family and no other cpu's are beter for the mobo than there would be no need to upgrade because a mobo is out of budget.

I didn't mean that your cpu is the latest, I meat the one I talked about was the latest, yours isn't the latest. That ebay link is a link to that processor that is the "latest".

..But I'm not sure, sockets can span architectures sometimes. And other threads I am reading are suggesting that you can upgrade it to different types of CPUs. Dangerous though.

On second though, I think your best bet,would be to just save up enough money to buy a new computer. A $65 dollar trinity apu with a $55 dollar mobo would do the trick. You would have to have the drivers before hand though.

hmm this is a desktop and it definately had the ppg, not the mpg in the begining. however yes by the description our sockets are the same.
maybe my bios is reading it as a diffrent cpu for some reason. kind of how when you unlock a core it reads it as a different cpu.

if she had sata hdd and not ide i could just get a new mobo and cpu for her. but i am pretty sure they dont make any mobo's with ide connection anymore. and the converter is just too expensive to keep it on a budget. i e mailed the mobo manufacturer (i think it was them) asking if the mpga478b socket cpu would work

Are all in that socket. Your motherboard might be proprietary though. (not allow upgrades)

Well there are ide to sata adapters out there for cheap.

I think that is the cheapest bare parts upgrade you can buy. Other than just replacing the cpu.

Other than that, I think you'll just have to find a cpu ofo of e-bay and the like. Also consider backing up her harddrive to a sata one in the future.

thank you for the rundown of parts. i was having trouble finding an adapter for under 22 bucks, and she has 2 hard drives. but with that i can make her a nice upgrade. 150 was right where we were aiming for. thanks!
