As above I am hoping to upgrade my GPU shortly from an Gigabyte R9 280X 3gb to a 8gb GTX 1080. Basically I want to ask, for the cost (have found one for about £450) is it worth it, will I see a significant improvement in FPS at 1080p and is it a big enough jump up in quality or for a similar price can I get something better (not preowned)?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My current setup is as follows:

i7 4790K 4.4ghz
R9 280X 3gb
12gb DDR3 Ram
Maximus VII Ranger

The GPU I am looking at is this one:

Thanks :)

I think you should see a SIGNIFICANT increase in performance with a 1080.

R9 280X Passmark Score 5248
GTX 1080 Passmark Score 12313

and your CPU is plenty fast enough for a 1080.

If you aren't considering going to a higher resolution monitor, you could arguably save a little money by going for a 1070 Ti. They're often listed as the best value option for 1440p, and I think it'd pull off high frame rates (120+ fps) at 1080p for the medium term. But if you have the budget space and no concerns about pinching pennies, the 1080 is certainly even better.
