So I'm looking to get a Asus 970 Strix. I noticed it has a 8 pin power connection and the power supply I currently have is http://www.cnet.com/products/axp-simplepower-axp-630p12p-power-supply-630-watt/specs/. Will using a 6 to 8 pin connector work with my psu or will I have to upgrade the psu as well??

Solution
According to this it looks to have split +12v rails, one at 21 amps and the other at 22 amps: http://www.realhardtechx.com/index_archivos/Page13098.htm

So total +12v amps is over 40, so you are fine. It also has 2x 6-pin PCIe power connectors, so you will need one 8-pin (6+2) adapter like toyftw linked above. The only potential issue I see is it not being an efficient PSU, not being rated at 80+. But it certainly won't harm anything...you just have a less efficient PSU meaning more power is wasted drawn from the wall under load. Power wise, you are good to go!

FYI an 8-pin PCIe connector is often referred to as the 6+2 pin PCIe connector. There is a 6-pin and a 2-pin connector on the same cable that can be split. That 2-pin orphan...

Hi - You are prob OK, but I need you to one thing to confirm:
Please look at the label affixed to the side of the PSU and post here the actual # of total watts available
for the +12v.

Assuming there is sufficient power (I think there is, but you need to confirm),
you need an adapter, such as:

Yes, there are 2 +12v rails, you don't need 40 +12v(480 watts) amps tho. A sys with one gtx 970 requires
28 +12v amps to run. So, I need you to confirm the total +12v watts from the label is at least 336w, preferably more.

The reason for the dual 6pin to 1 pin pcie is to insure you have enough power for the gtx 970. An 8 pin pcie
can draw twice as much power as a 6 pin, but the 2 pins have enough power.

You need to buy a new power supply that one is very low quality only 516 (questionable) watts combined on the 12 volt rail with 21A going to the motherboard and 22A on the molex and PCI-E lane. That's why it only has a single 6 pin for the PCI-E.
A very simple rule of thumb for power supplies before you even get into the actual quality IF IT DON'T HAVE THE RIGHT CABLES DON'T USE IT.

No, you do not need to buy a new PSU. While your PSU may not be top of the line it has more than
enough power for a sys with one gtx 970, I also do not associate PSU's mfgd by Superflower to
be very low quality.

Just be sure to use the dual 6 pin pcie's(to one 8 pin) your PSU provides not one.

I want to upgrade the psu to a more efficient and modular would obviously be nice too. I'm in greater need of the GFX card so I was hoping that the 6 to 8 pin would suffice in the mean time of getting the funds together. My idea is to get the GFX first and then look into getting a decent PSU.

Thanks for the replies

If you are tight on funds then don't worry this will do for now. But if you want to push 970 to its further limits then this PSU is a no go. It will probably give-up all-together. So I would recommend not to push your 970 further from its base limit until you upgrade to better PSU to be on safer side.

To be simple this PSU will do for time-being but don't try to push the 970 further than its base limit to be safe.

Enjoy Asus 970Strix upgrade. :)
