when trying to upgrade from winme to winxp i get this error similar to this:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shutdown to prevent damage to your computer. PROCESS1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED If this is the first time you have seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

Technical Information:

***STOP: 0x0000006B (0xC000003A, 0x0000002, 0x0000000, 0x0000000)

the main difference is that it also suggest that i run CHKDSK /F. i ran scandisk instead and still get this error. i know this is covered under microsofts tech support FAQ's, but the solution has not worked for me. this is a newly built computer and the only software on it is winme and the updated drivers necessary for the hardware.

i upgraded on my other pc with no problems whatsoever.

ideas?

I would say that your best bet is to format the partition where you are attempting to install WinXP, and install the operating system without overwriting WinME. The system will run better as a clean installation, in any case.

If you have a copy of the WinME operating system CD, you should be able to use the XP upgrade disk to install the OS. It will ask you for verification of the previous OS, so have the WinME disk on hand.

If you still run into a problem, strip the machine down to the barebones, with only the video card, memory, CD-ROM, hard drive, floppy drive, and PSU connected internally. Then format the partition, and try to install the OS. If this works, afterwards, begin reinstalling the rest of your hardware, one device at a time, using the latest drivers from the manufacturer.
