Upgrading pets

I'm getting a bit better at using pets now. Only problem is, the cat
I start out with simply doesn't cut it later on in the game. A large cat
can't compete with many of the monsters out there. What are your favorite
later-on pets, how do you get them, and what do you do with them?

I'm thinking I pray that I get a scroll of taming, and then read it
on a giant ... those seem like big, strong monsters to have as a pet, no?

You may find useful some of the info contained in the Pacifist FAQ.

Well, I had - for example - made *very* good experiences with a pet titan.

It's easier to polymorph pets. What you need is an ordinary pet, a polymorph
trap, a magic whistle, and just a little patience. A wand of polymorph has
usually too few charges for a guaranteed excellent pet. And the scroll of
taming does not work very well on the high level creatures that often resist
this kind of magic.

You can polymorph existing pets and hope for a better one.
You can also wish for blessed figurine (or find figurine in shops and
bless them, but I've never seen really big monster's figurines in shops).

Blessed figurines have 80% chance of giving a tame monster when applied
(and a small chance of giving an angry monster...)

A classical choice is the blessed figurine of an archon. Archon are always
good pets.

Hypocoristiquement,
Jym.

Really good pets include purple worms, archons, master mind flayers,
Mariliths, arch liches and titans. However, pets have a nasty
tendency to attack when they shouldn't, and to die in the most
unfavourable situations. Hence, I don't use pets too much.

Sounds good to me. Giants are useful. Note, however, that you
can't lock them away easily.

I also add Guardian Nagas to that list - they paralyze things they hit,
which lets them kill things without getting killed.

True - giant can be a pain if you have a priest you want to keep alive...

But you should not use the figurine, before you can deal with an Archon
yourself...
