The current power supply appears to be 250 Watts. Can this be upgraded? If
so, by how much without cooking the motherboard and other sensitive
materials inside the CPU.

Thanks

Could I ask WHY? I have an 8200 with enough hardware to choke a horse.

This machine is set up with one small drive (20 gig) partitioned off as
C: / D: On C are the operating systems (ME / XP) with any updated files
or drivers saved on the D drive. Also on C are any files that cannot
run
from a drive other than C.(some AV programs, add on card control
programs).

Another drive (120 gig) is set up as E: / F: and it has programs such
as
Office, Roxio EZCD, Power DVD On the E: area with My Email files and
web
Cache. Then the F: has pictures and games that I don't worry about.

Then there is a controller card with 4 more drives (2 120 gig and 2 80
gig) the 120s are set up as mirror drives, one can fail and the same
data will still be on the other drive with no loss. They are also split
at 60 gig. This is the area that any important data gets sent. Legacy
backups,Office working files, family pictures, things like that. These
get backed up to an outboard Eagle drive unit (hot swap external hard
drive) and put in storage, (I have pictures of Everything ((serial
numbers as well)) in the house and the cars in case I need them as
proof
after a loss).

The 80 gig drives are both MP3 storage (Music)

Then there is the DVD +/- RW drive and a DVD/CD high speed drive. And
two different memory card readers (one gets used just for my camera and
the other is everything else). Plus a LS 120 drive instead of a
standard
floppy. Add in a ATI 9800 pro card and an Audigy sound card.

All running on the stock PS.

The video cards I am looking at say they require power supplies of 300 Watts
or more.

So does the 9800, the Dell power supply is VERY underrated. It will
handle it with no problem.

Absolutely true. My 4550 is 'rated' at 250 and handles my 9800 Pro + 3 hard
drives just fine.

Like the others, I am running an ATI 9800 (requires 300 watts) on an 8300
rated nominally at 250 watts with no problems.
