Probably shouldn't say but if you download a enterprise version and use MS toolkit you can activate a KMS there is version available although you can buy a Windows 7 Pro - Cheap now which still allows you a upgrade.

Enterprise licenses are not applicable for the Windows 10 Upgrade.

That's what I usually do because you can activate KMS using the pro version too!

I just successfully activated 8.1 using the key I got through g2a.com using Microsofts text message system.

Is this an equivalent to the phone? As in would they of told me its a MSDN code the text message method?

Thanks

This is what Microsoft has to say regarding G2A:
Dear Valued customer,
You have reached Microsoft Customer Service, South East Asia. My name is Rizky and I would address your enquiry. As I understand it, you have inquiry for Microsoft Windows 8 Pro from G2A website. If my understanding is inaccurate, please let me know.
For this information, we have to inform you that it is not recommended by Microsoft to make purchases of these softwares as they are not official and genuine versions that are support by Microsoft activation. Microsoft does not have any vendor agreements with G2A or any of it’s resellers and so this in direct conflict to the Microsoft software license agreement since they are not an authorized electronic supplier of genuine Microsoft software. We cannot verify the genuine sales of the G2A third party seller but without authorization from Microsoft they cannot be genuine supplier.
Sincerely, it was a pleasure helping you. If ever you need further assistance please don’t hesitate to send us an email and we will be more than happy to help you.
Thank you for contacting Microsoft. Have a nice day!
Regards,
Rizky

Thanks for that!

To be honest though, as long as it activates using the phone system - which it has - and I don't get an error message within the next few months, I don't think it matters where people get the keys from :)

No, it doesn't matter.
Just like buying a 70" 4k TV in the Walmart parking lot for $60 doesn't matter.

I'm really surprised that this thread was allowed to get as far as whether or not a recommendation for g2a is a suitable BA. A thread requesting help with pirated software should have been locked from the start IMO.

Two and a half days later and this thread asking for help with pirated software is still open....

Agreed it was an unfair comment about the initial recommendation for g2a, but the discussion has continued for days.

We've been told to follow what we hear from MS.

Normally, this would be deleted or closed.

However, MS has been so vague in their comments about pirated copies and upgrades that we're having trouble finding out if they're OK with this or not.

They say that you won't get a genuine copy from the upgrade, but seem to encourage it nonetheless.

What are the qualifications for the free upgrade?

The only requirements are that a) your device is compatible, and b) you’re running genuineWindows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) or Windows 8.1 (Update).

That's from the Windows 10 FAQ on the Microsoft web site. It doesn't seem ambiguous to me.

But, if you are not clear on the position, surely a reputable web site such as Tom's should err on the side of caution and not discuss how to upgrade pirated software? Just my two cents.

Here's the quote I'm working off, posted over in the mod section, from JP:
Microsoft is extending a sort of amnesty to users who have pirated Windows 8 to upgrade to Windows 10. I recommend we allow discussion along these lines, and carve out an exception for this time when a company has explicit expressed interest in accommodating pirates to ensure platform uniformity. Our Windows 10 category will feature a thread specifically oriented towards guiding pirates and answering their questions legitimately without judgment.

Andrew: "Won't this encourage piracy?"
Me: "That is not our problem. Microsoft has made the choice on this subject. We should comply and ensure our users have valid assistance on this. Legitimacy is established by the precedence set by Microsoft on upgrading pirated copies."

We have an ongoing thread on this topic.

The OP has purchased a copy of windows whether this be a legitimate/valid purchase Microsoft will have to confirm down the road.

I have personally bought MANY games from G2A.com into my steam account and have NEVER had any problems activating these games.

Microsoft's vagueness needs to change. They must have in-house documents or policies which specifically clarify what types of keys are 'genuine' and allow the end user the opportunity to validate their key against those policies whether that be via a tool, webchat or over the phone.

Ms wants everyone onto Windows 10, piracy watermark or not - this the perception i have of the company.

So why allow a second one? And I find the statement that encouraging piracy is "not our problem" greatly at variance with the values that I though Tom's stood for.

Personally I think that Microsoft has clearly made a choice on the subject - which is stated in their FAQ. I am not aware theat they have set any precedence by (knowingly) upgrading pirated copies of Windows. Confusion about pirated copies did exist back in March but has long been cleared up by further statements from Microsoft.

But, not my business. If Tom's wish to allow the discussion of pirated software then that's their business, not mine (other than how it affects my opinion of the web site).

So why allow a second one?
No, I mean we've been actively discussing what we should do about this over in the mod section.

Ms wants everyone onto Windows 10, piracy watermark or not - this the perception i have of the company.
This is sort of the message we've been getting. They want you to have a genuine OS... but if you won't do that, they'd prefer you to run a non-genuine Win10 than a non-Genuine 7/8
