I have an Asus Xonar D2. I am having trouble getting it to upmix 2 channel audio to 5.1 channels. When I watch Netflix, it upmixes correctly. But when I listen to Pandora or watch YouTube videos, it doesn't always upmix the 2 channel audio to 5.1 channels despite me having Dolby Pro Logic IIx enabled. Any ideas what is causing this? The other night, Pandora upmixed correctly, but now it's not. No matter what options I choose in the Xonar's control panel, the audio playing is completely unaffected. Could it be a problem with Adobe Flash?

I suspect it will only upmix if the audio is Dolby. Netflix is probably using Dolby Digital(aka "AC3").

If you have any videos on your hard drive, use "mediainfo" (install and set it to look at directories in the settings so you can right-click).

Try playing media with AC3 listed for audio and videos that do NOT have AC3 (MP3, Vorbis, AAC..). I suspect AC3 will be the only one that works.

I went to the Dolby site but it wasn't specific about this. Your audio card manual should be more specific about what sound sources it can upmix.

Considering that the hardware needs to "understand" how the audio signal is formatted to properly upmix it seems logical that the "Dobly Pro Logic IIx" option only works on Dobly Digital (AC3) sources.

*UPDATE:
I found the information on page #35 of your motherboard at the Asus site.

It claims it can decode MP3, CD-Audio etc. Since it is working for Netflix I can only conclude that there are situations in which it doesn't work either because of the audio codec chosen or the way the video itself is created.

I don't believe there's anything you can do. If a video isn't upmixing then it simply isn't supported. I suspect it's more about how the video was created than the actual audio codec itself.

Other:
I've seen many people state that they noticed they didn't like the audio sound that was created by upmixing and once the novely of surround sound wore off they preferred to stick with no upmixing for stereo sources.

I have a Asus Xonar DG with Creative T440 4.1 surround using K-Lite Mega Codec (new 7.0.0 version) and I do get surround with Youtube.
I tried this video Black Eyed Peas Imma Be 720p
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUFsQ5lTo6g
and I had surround.
Try that video and see what happens.
What the other posters are saying is true
It really depends on the format of the audio stream
Remember alot of Youtube vids are shot with less than high tech video equipment
