Urgent Question: Will This Motherboard Run Two Cards in dual x16?

Will this ASUS Maximus IV Extreme-Z LGA 1155 Intel Z68 sli two gtx 580 3gb gpu's in dual x16 or just x8,x8?

I am not hardware savvy at all and I need to know because I am about to order this right now or an X79 pci e 3.0 mobo that I know will sli two cards in dual x16 mode.

So, yes, you can run two cards at X16.

It seems to me the way I interpreted the specs sheet is that The ASUS Maximus IV Extreme-Z LGA 1155 will only run dual sli in x8. If you run Triple SLI it will run the first card x8,second x16 and the third x16? (Sorry I know that isn't a definitive answer, the specs sheet is not clear)

I don't think it has the option to run dual SLI in x16. (I could be wrong though, i was of the understanding that there are no sli boards for Sandybridge that have full x16 for SLi configuration, I thought it was coming with the "enthusiasts range" that is the LGA2011 chipset)

Also, when you say the other option is a X79 board are you referring to the LGA2011 motherboard that runs the 3930K and 3960K I7 extreme CPUs?

You might already be aware of this but if I am assuming correctly, the two motherboards you have listed will not run the same CPU's, that is, the ASUS Maximus IV Extreme-Z LGA 1155 will only be able to take the CPU's associated with LGA1155 chipset. (LGA1155 - I3,I5,I7 - Sandy Bridge) The X79 boards will only take the CPU's associated with the LGA2011 chipset. (at the moment that only includes LGA2011- 3930K and 3960K I7's).

If you decide to change motherboards you might need to look at a different CPU as well.

Alright, thanks a whole lot. Unfortunately I have to go with a prebuilt from a website so I didn't really have the option to go with a x79 board without also getting a sandy bridge e processor which would be pointless for me as I use my computer mostly for gaming and the extra cores would basically be worthless to me. It looks like the 2600k with this mobo is the best choice for my budget range though I am still a little sad that I won't be have those pcie 3.0 slot's for further future proofing. I'll still be able to add on another card later though so I am pretty happy about that.

Oh wow, okay. Yeah, I didn't realize that about the processors. Hmmm. Also the specs sheet was the reason I asked in the first place because I also wasn't clear if that meant I had to run 3 cards with two in 16 and one in 8. If that's the case then I have a little to think about now.

You are correct in that I was referring to LGA2011 with the 3930K in mind, but I wasn't sure if that was going to be the way to go with gaming. However, maybe it is; or maybe the extreme series cpu's out now are going to suck compared to the 4 core ivy bridge ones so now I'm wondering if that's just going to be a bad move.


It all really kinda sucks to be on this deadline of getting a computer with all the new stuff coming out around the corner... "sigh"

Oh and just fyi, If I had a computer now that could run any current game at all I would wait it out. My 4870 X2 died this summer, and besides; I was basically in need of a new build over a year ago any way. I can't even run minecraft on my laptop it's so sad.
