Usb device has exceeded the power limit

Hello,
Recently, my printer has quit working. My computer now gets a pop up on the taskbar that reads "a usb device has exceeded the power limit of its hub port." I don't understand how it could have exceeded its limits when we are only utilizing 2 of the 6 ports on the computer. Can you help me figure out how to get rid of this message and get the printer back up to tip top shape? Please and thanks.

unplug all usb devices including your printer
shut down the computer
start it up again
plug only the printer back in and test it
