My PSU recently got fried and all I can salvage is 2 pin fan from it. Its 12 V so it should work like any other case fan. All the fan connectors on my mobo are either 3 pin or 4 pin and I am not able to find a suitable connector/adapter for it. May be I am searching for the wrong terminology.

Mobo: MSI ZH77A G41
New PSU: Cordair CX 450

Does that fan have a 2 pin connector ? If it does you can use any 3 or 4 pin connector on the MB (first 2 pins) but forget about reading it's speed and any speed control, it will always rub full speed.
With so many cheap fans, why would you want to use that one ?

My motherboard does have 3 and 4 pin connectors but they also have a plastic lock kind of mechanism in place which won't let this 2 ping fan get inside those pins. See this: http://www.manualsdir.com/manuals/467044/msi-z77a-g41.html?page=33

Also, I wonder if this fan was in my old PSU, that would mean my PSU would have ran it full speed all the time, since it has only 2 pins?

Yes, it was most probably running full speed on the PSU too although they tend to run slower than proper CPU and case fans. Don't think it would be useful in the case.

Well I was so happy to do something exciting with an old part without sending it all to trash. Guess I should by a new fan (500 INR) altogether which supports thermal and power sensors rather than spending money on the 2 pin to 3 pin adapters (200-300 INR)
