Using second wireless router to extend range of wireless network

I have a dead zone in my home and I have a network cable run into a closet in the area. I have made this work before but I don't remember how. I want to add a second wireless router to the network in this closet which is in the dead zone. How do I switch the router to become just a wireless access point?

If the two routers are the same brand and both support WDS you could do it wirelessly, if not this shows the principle:
