I just purchased Unreal Tournament 2004 after seeing some friends play it and I couldn't believe how awsome it was. Problem is, I got it and it runs extremely slow on my computer. There is no reason for this to happen. I meet all requirements and being a laptop should not matter. Integrated Graphics shouldnt matter either because it's didnt say on the box that the game wont run on an integrated graphics card. Does anyone know what I can do to make this run better, and please, no rude replies.

I wish there was a graphics card I could just put in my PCMCIA card slot, or hook up to the USB.
 
Unfortunatly, Unreal Tournament 2004 I expect is taxing on the video card and cpu both (they use it for benchmarking), especially with bots. To make it at least playable, lower all settings to its lowest, and if it runs fine, slightly raise settings to get to the right graphics/performance ratio.

Even though your system may technically meet the requirements for UT2004, I think you're really over-estimating the quality of your hardware (in reference to gaming). Your graphics 'card' is *definately* a severe weakness in your system, and 256 is barely cutting it for any new game these days.

Your best bet is probably as the above poster mentioned, turn all the settings way way down and hope for the best.
 
If I add more RAM to my computer (Yeah I know its a laptop but I looked it up and the max my computer could actually have is 1024MB) Will that make my graphics card perform better seeing as it's integrated??? PLEASE TELL ME THIS WILL WORK!!!!
 
Your graphics capabilities are, how shall we say, very weak. Try lowering the quality settings and seeing if you can find a happy spot.

No, adding memory won't improve your graphics. Its the graphics chipset that is holding you back, not the amount of shared memory.

Seriously dood, when a game puts the minimum requirements on the box, they really are the minimum. Just cause your computer meets these does not mean its gonna play at all well.

Have you thought about investing in a new computer? The Athlon XP's are very cheap and provide all the processing power you will need for todays games. Wack in 512mb of RAM and a £50 gfx card and a hard disk and u have urself a decent system.

Most laptops are not built for gaming. For a gaming laptop,you want something with built-in ATI graphics, not Intel.

Thanks for agreeing with me there jammy. I think I'm just going to give up. My income is very low right now. I'm in college, that takes a lot of my time as it is without a job. Over the summer I'll be taking some classes and teaching private lessons to little kids which definately wont give me the cash for a new comp. I just got this laptop right before this school year with the assistance of my father and I'm in no position to get a new computer. I'll just have to look into more RAM just for kicks and see what happens. Otherwise I'll just be stuck with this computer.

College kids!! stay away from computers!!they will mess you up!!
(well...maybe drugs...alchohols....perhaps sex too....but stay away from games)

Many games don't even run well at the recommended specs let alone the minimum specs.

Think about it. You buy the game, install it, and it sucks. Well, you're SOL since you've opened the box and can't return it. Your only option is to send it back to the manufacturer.

there is a reason why it was called "minimum specs" =P
it will RUN....but playing the game is a different story

Is it really unbearable at 800x600x16, lowest settings? Because its not awful like that - the ut engine scales very well. You'd still get the feel of the game, the enjoyment, just not the eye candy.

Thank you so much for telling me that, I was going to ask my dad for a laptop as a present for passing my ECDL. I was going to ask for an XPC with enough room to add my own graphics card as these will kick the ass of the laptop graphcis (as long as I used something much beefier than my Tnt2!) and it will be more expandable in the future. But you cant exactly lug an XPC, K/B, Mouse and Monitor around on the London Underground (or subway trains in the case of you americans) can you?

So which company does laptops that have a Widescreen TFT and are ideal for games. Also is it at all possible to upgrade a Laptop's RAM and Hard Disk?

Try Dell or Compaq, they make some decent laptops. Dell has some new laptops with the Radeon Mobility 9600 Turbo Pro with 128MB memory (article found <A HREF="http://www6.tomshardware.com/mobile/20040421/index.html" target="_new">here</A>).

As for the HDD and RAM, yes, they can be upgraded as long as you don't mind opening them up to do the work. Or paying someone else to do it.
