It's just the usual stupid decision made by bad franchise spinoffs - an
excellent, mould breaking game has a half-good sequel, which in turn has a
quarter-good sequel, whic finally, many years later, has a downright awful
sequel that rips apart all remaining shreds of continuity and the style of
the original game, keeping little other than the title and one character
name (now given to a totally different, generic pastry-cutter action hero).
Naturally it is this last, worst-sequel-of-all that has nothing to do with
the original franchise that is chosen for the movie adaptation.

I wouldn't mind betting that Boll isn't even aware that the earlier games
exist, though in part this could be excused by modern sequel-makers'
insistence of dropping original titling and naming every game as if it were
a stand-alone, ie calling it "the new nightmare" instead of just "Alone in
the dark 4", "Thief: deadly shadows" instead of"Thief 3". Apparently this
practice has been adopted because of the assumption that console-owners are
too stupid to grapple with the concept that new games for their system had
sequels on other systems, or something similarly nonsensical. Ah well, at
least iD software still know how to do it properly.
