@stevejnb

I'll just say this:
The HL series are games with 0 cutscenes and yet told a great story beautifully. U have 100% player control and camera control from game start to game end and yet 90% of players do what the developers intended them to do.

As an example, i might add
MGS Ground zeroes trailer spans about 9 minutes - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltH1eWxZutE
The exact same map is finished by a developer in about 11 minutes - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xtnyI4USV14
A newbie might finish in 16 minutes
Atleast 1/4th the time of the videogame is a cutscene. Are u playing a videogame or watching a movie? I'm not saying MGS is a bad game but since probably it has the longest cutscenes i choose MGS to criticize. It's the design of the HL game that is awesome. U will probably have to play the game as a game developer itself to really understand the amount of detail the game has to offer.

Half life 1 was made with GoldSrc which is a heavily modified Quake engine. Gabe Newell left Microsoft and started Valve, they needed some base to work with.
HL 2 was delayed because Source Engine leaked over the internet. And when it was released it had the best graphics technology at that time.
And the overhype is due to the fact that they left the series in a hanging position. HL2 EP2 had a great sad ending and they even told what the main objective will be in the next game of the series.

Chimera, I don't disagree with much of what you said. Thing is, most of what you said doesn't contradict the things I pointed out, and you openly admit that the games are overhyped. HL was a step forward in first person video game storytelling, and I daresay that's about the biggest thing one can really credit it for as a game. The engines the game were built on were centerpoints for the modding community, but as several people have shown to be ignorant of, it was *far* from the start of the modding community.

I hope Half-Life 3 is as good as Half-Life 2 was, because it was a ride and a half. The first game was great - up until you got to the alien planet, then it was kinda meh. Also, there is always the Duke Nukem Forever effect to worry about... But one can hope Half-Life 3 is a Metroid Prime rather than a DNF, as far as popular series with long-term no-shows on it go.

I guess most ppl who said overhyped must be the teens who never play Half-Life or even know what it is Half-Life. In their head they can think was "call of duty define everything" If it wasn't Half Life, Doom and other FPS games, You wouldn't even have Call Of Duty

The textile industry received a bump from a mysterious 1-day spike in the purchase on new pants. Analysts are baffled.

Incidentally, the announcement of application for a HL3 trademark in the european union is some of the finest trolling I've ever seen.

Before today, I had never played Half-Life. I wanted to see how got it was for myself, plus I also wanted an opportunity to test Steam on Linux in Big Picture mode with a controller so I installed Half-Life 2 today. I am rarely impressed by games that most people hype so I expected to be disappointed, especially since the game was made in 2004.

I've been playing for around and hour and a half and I have to say I'm impressed. The story is above average, especially considering when it was made. Graphics are dated but that's expected. I love the lack of map, the minimalist interface, and the lack of mission logs. I'll report more later, but this game is very good. I love games where the player isn't treated like a 5 year old on an iPad, but then again I'm a fan of old school Ultima Online.

As for Steam big picture, it's good. Works great with a controller and would be fine for a console interface. Better than what is currently on the 360 for sure. When I was playing I was actually thinking about how I would like to have a low end Steam box to stream this to my 55" living room TV.

Eh, I think this is more of a trolling expedition than anything meaningful. Wouldn't they already have the "Half Life" moniker trademarked? And thus, anything falling under it? Though I could not be understanding trademark law properly.

Ok, I've been reading Tom's for years and this might be my 2nd post but I feel strong enough about this to comment. Let me preface my comments with letting it be known that I'm 44 years old and I didn't grow up with Half LIfe 2. However, the story is incredible and it never gets old. In fact, I'm playing through it now and I never get tired of it. I play through it every 2 years or so and even though I know what's happening and now whats coming up, the challenge is still fun. It's a fantastic game and I hope HL3 does come out and if it does I will be first in line to buy it.

when it comes to graphics, while i do prefer Half life2 and source graphics, it was still beat by far cry.

remember that glorious game?

I think it will a lot more interesting to see the things Valve has done with the Source 2 engine. And then, we'll see what there is for story in Half Life 3.

So much praise for the Half Life series... I guess I'm just too old school. While people were into stories and puzzles with crappy slow rocket launchers I was more into kicking ass in Quake World Rocket Arena. I always felt like HL was more of a Quake mod sort of like Action Quake or something...

Also I get irritated when people dis COD... again the old school me thinks of when the original COD came out and how awesome it was. Instant classic for LAN parties.. the sound of shooting someone's helmet as they popped up for a look. It totally sucks ass that COD is only known for shitty consoles now.. sad

I meant it as a joke 😛 (I wish I ahd enough HDD's for all of that, not to mention the money) but indeed I have every Vavle game

Half-Life 3: "Infinite"...it's what all the cool kids call their games today.
