Yes gm0n3y you are mostly correct. They did try to test it by testing the "drag" the earth should have generated while passing though, which they never could. And Scientists are still not sure about the medium of space. The new String Theory idea would provide such an answer though. But in the end AEther is just empty space. Beyond the edge of the universe... is more space... simple as that. I belive they edge of the universe is the distance from a virtual center that mater and energy exsists.
Note: the big bang started in every point in the universe at once (not space). Now I dont know of any concrete theory that shows the fabric or medium of space was bunched up inside the big bang, so I am going to discard that.
