video card upgrade question

Solution
and as a rough guide on the gtx1070 temp

running unigine benchmark card overclocked to 2100mhz and memory at 10,000mhz

max temp was 44c which is around 10c cooler than my msi gtx970 was at 16000mhz

both cards on custom watercooling with fans turned way down and pumps at 50%
depends one what resolution for one thing

at 1080p the gtx970 is fine

at 1440p the gtx970 will still do though some games stuff wont be at max settings

at 1440p with much higher settings the gtx1070 is great

at 4k get the gtx1080

i went from msi g4 gaming gtx970 heavily overclocked my new gtx1070 just blows it away even though the gtx970 was a great card

As long as you don't push settings into unrealistic territories (*cough* ultra *cough*), I think the GTX 1070 will do 4K 60. I know a lot of people are pushing for above 60 FPS at 4K but monitors for that aren't widely available and the ones that are in development are likely going to be insanely expensive.

According to this PC Games N article, it will launch on March 10th during PAX East.

I don't recommend SLI for multiple reasons:
1) Power consumption and heat output.
2) Support. Not all games support SLI. Many games will only use a single GPU even when multiple are available. This issue also applies to dual GPU cards.
3) Non-linear scaling. It's very rare that a game is optimized well enough to get 2x the performance out of two cards. Often times, you'll be getting around 1.5x the FPS with some extra stutter thrown into the mix.
4) Microstutter. Because of the time it takes for the signal to travel between cards, microstutter is introduced into the equation. This means that you may achieve a higher FPS, but the game may not play as smoothly as it did with a single card.

2 x 970 in sli would probably be the best bang for the buck option

expecting the gtx1080ti to come in around the £800 region myself

so cheaper than a titan but still out of reach for an awful lot of people

What happens when he gets a 4K monitor and the games he plays don't support SLI or are poorly optimized for multiple GPUs?

not a fan of sli myself i prefer 1 good card

but the gtx970 isnt severely power hungry nor severely hot as long as its got aftermarket cooler on it instead of founders edition

yes not every game plays nicely with sli

all comes down to what your wallet has in it as always though

might happen like i said not a fan of sli myself but 2 x 970 is very cost effective and dont see him saying he can afford the really high price a 1080ti or titan costs

Some of the 980 ti cards have come down in price after the 10 series release. https://www.google.com/#q=980+ti&tbm=shop&spd=11795922828253574103

its a great card had mine overclocked up to 1600mhz

it all depends how much you want to spend as it usually does--2 x 970 is by far the cheapest option though sli does have its drawbacks

personally i think you should wait to see what the 1080ti and amd vega cards bring to the table

though one things certain the 1080ti will be expensive

not sure i would bother with the hybrid version to be honest the 1070 isnt a really hot card with a good cooler on it

though thats just my opinion

As long as you have the room in your case for a radiator (rear exhaust location would be optimal), that card will serve you well. However, there's nothing that really gives it a genuine advantage over air cooled cards because the Pascal architecture is very efficient and the 1070 just sips on power compared to its older brother the 980 ti.
