Video settings on Gigabyte AMD785 board

I can't find the correct setting for my widescreen monitor. It's a 22" LCD display and the native resolution is 1680 x 1050. That is not one of the choices in the setting or the ATI control panels. In fact there are very few widescreen resolutions. I tried to upload the Video drivers from Gigabyte. Not sure if I was successful as nothing seemed to change. Motherboard model is GA-MA785GM-us2h.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I originally had it plugged in as VGA and let it run as 1280x1024. When I connected it as DVI to the correct monitor I thought it would give the correct options. But it did not.

I'm back after a weekend trip, and a little project yesterday. Here are the readings from Sisoft Sandra for the Video settings. I'm attempting to get answers from Gigabyte Tech Support, who have been slow so far. If progress is not made, the board will go back to Newegg in exchange for something else.

Hey, I took a quick trip to the Lake myself - didn't see ya up there! Weather was great - it suddenly decided to rain in Central Tx last week, most we've had in almost 2 yrs - but the bugs also loved it and were out in force.

Here's my results from Sandra using 3 different monitor drivers. The Sceptre and my Samsung drivers gave identical results - the Plug N Play a little different. But they all differ from yours and all list some 1680x1050 modes and don't list the 1920x1080 modes shown on your results. And setting the Display settings in XP to show All Modes has no effect on Sandra's results.

Here's what I think we can learn from this. The characteristics that your monitor actually has affects the Sandra modes listed more than the driver you're using. And according to this, my monitor supports 1680 modes and not 1920 modes - which is correct. Your monitor supports 1920 modes but not 1680 modes - according to Sandra.

You mentioned that this monitor shows the 1680 mode on your other computer. But isn't the other computer running the Sceptre monitor as an Analog device? And aren't you trying it as a digital device on the Gigabyte board? Have you tried it on the other cable, Analog, on this new board? My monitor shows different modes at the high-end when I plug it in with the VGA rather than DVI-D connector. Yours likely will too. Maybe it only runs the 1680 modes as an analog device? Note the changes when I run it as Analog from Sandra below.

You didn't post the Monitor results from Sandra - by pulling down Video Adaptor and choosing Monitor. I posted mine below, showing only the relevant info. It seems correct for my Samsung. Be interesting to see the same results for your Sceptre - these likely aren't affected by either driver or adaptor.

If you do decide to return the motherboard, despite the headaches it may have caused, you might try a replacement first. I'm convinced this is a good motherboard - and I assume you like it otherwise. Getting a different one may lead you to other issues. And you might point Newegg to this forum thread if you do change boards - it'll give you ammo for not paying the restocking fee. (I recently did this with my original 1066 memory which wanted 2.2V and they dropped the fee.)

Notice btw, that I'm running my 4200 at increased speed (500MHz > 800MHz), increased memory speed (400MHz > 533MHz) because of my 1066 RAM and decreased RAM devoted to the card (512MB > 256MB) because I can't find any need for it with my applications. This gives me an extra 256GBs of system RAM delivered to Win XP (3GBs total). So, the board does have some nice features which allow enchanced video.

Also, the year 2000 BIOS date reported by Sandra seems to be an error by the software, can't find that anywhere else. It also reports a completely wrong monitor serial number and other mistakes in other sections.

You send a whole bushel of stuff when you reply!! I'm in Arizona and we don't have hardly any good lakes. We go up to the pine trees. When is 105 in Phoenix (and it gets there a lot from July to mid-sept) then the high will be 80 to 85 at 6500 ft. Elevation makes all the difference. And it will be in the 50s at night.

The computers have both been hooked up to the monitor in 2 different ways. As you probably know it has both VGA and DVI inputs. The older computer is running a Gigabyte board with an AMD690 chipset, and it has a Radeon HD 2600 vid card installed. When it is connected with the DVI cable it runs in the 1680 mode and everything looks great. When it is hooked up to the VGA cable, it's not so good. If the video setting is at 1680, the monitor switches down to a lower res, like 1440 and the display goes to overscan. You have to move the cursor around to scroll the screen. To look OK the video setting has to be reduced. I think to 1440x900.
On the new machine with the HD 4200, on the DVI it's like I said. No 1680 mode. Only available widescreen is 1920x1080. Next best setting is 1280x960 which is a 4:3 ratio. On the VGA cable it's about the same. No 1680 or 1440 widescreen settings. Not sure about the top-end settings because I was not paying attention to them.
I will look at the monitor settings for the Sandra reports and post if I get anything interesting. One thing I know it that when I go to the CCC, the ATI software seems sure that the sceptre monitor has a max resolution of 1920x1080. There may be a monitor issue or 2, like that resolution and also what it does on the VGA cable with the 1680 setting. But I'll have to live with the monitor unless I want to spend some more money.

One more thing. I was on the phone this PM with Gigabyte tech support. After going thru a bunch of questions from him, he wanted to reinstall the drivers for the board from the GIGAbyte web site. Which I had downloaded before - the whole chipset drivers. So I ran the .EXE file and expanded it into a new folder. Then uninstalled the video adapter in the device manager, rebooted, cancelled XP from trying to install the driver when it detected the hardware. Then ran the driver install by running the SETUP file in the folder. After all that it was running the display setting at 1920x1080. And the 1680 and 1440 settings were still missing.
But the display looks pretty good at 1920. I'm trying it tonite to see if it's acceptable. The main difference I see is that the icons have to be set to be bigger and I have to bump the font sizes a bit as they tend to be a bit too small .

Guess what? It's working at 1680x1050. I found the same thing you did. Powerstrip !! Downloaded and installed it. On a 30-day trial period. Created a new display setting for the 1680 mode. The program then modifies the .inf and/or .pnf files that Windows uses to update drivers. After saving it and a reboot, the option was in the display settings list. SO IT WORKED FINALLY!

That's the good news. What it means apparently is that there was a problem in the .inf files. These apparently control the options that Win will allow to be selected. Somewhere in the process of building and installing on the new PC it got the wrong settings. I never installed a driver for the Sceptre as I did not have a disk for it. These settings get into the Win Registry also. So the hardware was never bad. The video adapter could do it. The monitor could do it. The #$%^& settings and the Windows driver update process were screwed up.

By the way, I recommend Powerstrip although I only know how to use one of the functions.

Whoooooo! I'm finally gonna sleep well tonite!

One of the things that PowerStrip seems to be able to do is create any WxH pixels arrangement you want. So you can create a 4:3 or any ratio you want at any size. So if you think say, 1024x768 is too small and 1280x1024 too small, you can make your own at an inbetween point. Great for CAD and Office workers or those with a 2nd monitor and special needs.

I am having the same problem with the 4200 on my asus M4A785TD-V EVO
and a BenQ FPP222w

I can not get it to run native 1680x1050 no option I have tried to update the monitor driver no luck at one point ati cc recognized the Benq Driver and said it had a supported rez of 1920x1080 which is does not.. i have tried to reload both drivers and now ati doesn't recognize the benq driver nor does windows but it shows under device mangers a benq monitor driver wired something must be wrong with the 4200 driver. as mulitble people have been having problem with different boards and monitors trying to run 1680x 1050 btw iam running xp32 pro and this happens with vga and hdmi

Altll, Read my last previous post. The problem is actually in WINDOWS. it has decided what video settings are appropriate, and those are the only ones you will see. If you could do the right registry hack it could probably be fixed that way. Without a script that's a little intimidating for me. Get the Powerstrip program. It has a 30-day trial built into the shareware options.
Use it to build a new display setting. While doing the 1680x1050 you might want to add 1440x900 also.

You should not even need a specific driver .inf file to set these as they are standard video settings. I believe the Hardware update and plug'n'play process has defects in Win XP. It seems to work better for the more 'well-known' monitors, but I can't prove it.

So.... I have the same mobo. I bought it with a Phenom II X3. I used to have an Acer 24" that did 1900x1200 but it died just shortly before this was built and it was replaced with a hannspree 25" that does max resolution at 1920x1080.

I am a microsoft partner and got my Windows 7 Ultimate license about a month ago. Heres my story as it differs slightly from your own.


So.. originally loaded Win 7 as only OS on this new machine :

What I ended up with after getting all drivers installed was that CCC would show that my monitor was displaying at its max resolution 1920x1080 but it was surrounded by black bars. When I would log off or reboot, right before I logged on it would show the login screen using the entire monitor but once logged in it would resort to its "letterboxed" image still showing that I was running the full resolution.

I decided to go back to Vista Ultimate and did a dual boot on same OSdrive . I have been running Vista Ultimate OK since then with one exception. The problem did follow this Windows Install, however, I found that through the CCC I was now able to see multiple refresh rates and select them vs in Win 7 where I can't change anything (rather, making a change does nothing, in fact after hitting ok or reply it goes back to default settings not allowing your change to take effect). But for the monitor to show correctly, after loggin in I have to go into the CCC and change the refresh rate from 59 to 60 hz and vice versa every single time I reboot. It doesn't care which refresh rate it has at boot, it will go back to letterbox until I make that one change and then bam, full screen again.

I sent in requests to Gigabyte complaining about compatibility and they told me basically to shut up and wait till the full win7 release date. I tried again recently and still no change.

I've got a perfectly good copy of Win 7 Ultimate jsut waiting for me to use but I can't .. I can't force myself to use it like that. its just too upsetting.

I'm confused as why after all this, you blame the motherboard? As with the others here, it seems like your problem is with the OS and the drivers for the monitor - and maybe with ATI. What did Gigabyte have to do with this?

You have the cheapest monitor available in the U.S. Heck, I got one for my Dad also, it's a great deal. But clearly it's not working properly or the driver Windows 7 is choosing for it isn't any good. Have you tried the solution found in this thread? Using an outside program to create a good working device driver?

Have you contacted Windows and Hannspree about correcting the driver problems?

Oh.. so when a hardware manufacturer makes a product that is supposed to work with an OS and it doesnt, I should call the OS? Did you read my post? I don't have the same problem as everyone else, my CCC says I AM running the correct resolution..

For the record, I was looking for help, not attitude. WTF do you work for Gigabyte? Gigabyte made the motherboard, chose which onboard video chipset to use. I have gone to ATI website and tried their driver fyi with no luck yet. I specifically bought this mobo for onboard dual video.

And before you go and diss me for "buying" the cheapest monitor possible, I should tell you I am in possesion of this monitor because I bought a much better one from Best Buy a year ago when the cost of monitors was higher, they gave me a lemon trade with the most comparable in the store at the time.

Recommend you start a new discussion instead of tacking your issue onto an old thread that was marked solved. Works better with one fresh issue.

If or WHEN you make your own topic, I suggest you consider that there may be several components involved with the issue that you have. There is the Operating System, and I know some ot the things that Windows has done. The drivers that were selected and installed is another. The Video graphics hardware and video drivers are 2 more factors. And as one more issue, examine the monitor controls to see what settings it might have, includind an 'auto adjust' feature.

Also, it's not a real good type of courtesy to ask for help in a discussion group, and then dump on the first person that replies.

wow, if you two are examples of the help on this site, nevermind. You seem to be more interested in my response to that dumb guy instead of my problem.. fair enough should start a new thread .. the only good peice of advice I've gotten on this site.

Did you take the time to read his reply??????? And.. then you go and add your two bits like thats got any weight to it. Do you realize I'm using a motherboard with onboard video? Did you even read my first post and... understand it??

I swear, if that guy isn't attacking the quality of my hardware or telling me absurd things like call Microsoft , or you telling me to look at my video hardware and drivers when I've already explained it in detail.... bah.. nevermind .. worthless SystemPat, I hope you arenot a system admin..

Its not the mobo.

Last week i bought a toshiba laptop at best buy for 450 bucks.
IT HAD HD 4200 ON IT!!!
and guess what, my 25 inch monitor had the same problems, black bars around the screen in 1920x1080.

Went to best buy to get a new laptop... same brand different one..... same thing happened.... I smell a product line of hd 4200 = DEFECT

Oh, did i mention i have a mobo from newegg, msi 785gtm-e45 with hd 4200.
Can you guess what happens when i plugg my monitor in the hdmi or vga, using 1920x1080... ????????

baaaammmm.. same thing as the two previous laptops from best buy.... What are the odds of that lol

Btw the monitor is not broken, im using my xbox 360 at 1920x1080 all the time.
And 2 weeks ago i had another laptop, 2 years old plugged in.. And worked fine..

Thanks Jujja for your corroborating evidence. I knew it was on the video chip side of the motherboard, unlike what others assumed, I only blame the motherboard manufacturer because they used this chipset for the onboard video.. which is why I bought the board to begin with. I didn't want to have to add a video card. Now unless ATI can fix the drivers.. which I just can't believe is not possible and I WILL email them ... I will be forced to accept this, keep running Vista Ultimate.. or buy a new mobo to use my computer the way I inteded.. as a win 7 box. But since I've already activated both the Win 7 Ult. license and the Vista Ultimate license on this hardware, i'm in for some work to get them to let me re-use them on a reload.

So do I blaim Gigabyte? sure.. and I would hope that they should find it as disturbng that ATI drivers for this mobo are fixed. No one likes to spend 100 bucks on junk.


BTW, this 25" monitor looks great on XP, and Vista after my fix, and oh yeah, the dual HDMI inputs are great for my xbox and PC to share :) ..

I am so glad I came across this forum. I have the same situation as System Pat. (BTW, I saw your posts on the newegg site as well.) I have the same MoBo, and also a 22 in Septre monitor, and also running 32 bit Windows XP. I could not get the 1680x1050 resolution either. I installed the latest driver from the gigabyte web site, then again from the amd/ati web site. Still no 1680x1050. I was really frustrated. Gigabyte tech support (by email) was TERRIBLE! After several days, I finally got back a message that said to update the drivers. I already told them in the problem report that I did that! I also downloaded the .inf file from Septre as explained above with no change. I went through almost all the things that Sytem Pat explained above.

I ended up just putting in my older XFX video card and configured it to 1680x1050 without any problems. I was still hoping to use the on-board video to free up my plugin card.

Anyway, I'll try the PowerStrip utility and see if it works for me. Thanks for the info.

Again, have you tried the solution that's worked for others in this thread? You can create a monitor profile that should give you all the things you want using the Powerstrip utility.

Sorry if you felt I was giving you attitude. But your comments about the motherboard were misplaced. The problem is with the .inf file which should be giving the proper information to Windows but is not. You can SOLVE your problem by creating a good .inf file - which is what I suggested.

I spent more time on this thread getting a solution to these users problems than any other thread in this forum. The fact that I found a solution is satisfying to me - and it should be to you also. Why not try what is suggested?

Hi guys,

I got display problem for samsung 940bw 1400x900
I using analog cable

Power strip only help to set to 1389 .....
Install samsung driver also nothing changes.

So I decide to do a final try before I give up.
Finally I get it.
I switch my xbox hdmi to dvi to get from hdmi output.
It work perfectly now.
