Virtual Memory Configuration

I have 12 Gigs of RAM and by default Vista has me at 23.9 gigs of Virtual memory? Is this necessary? I heard I could turn it off to improve performance? Is this also true? I'm a little confused as I never had (nor needed) to mess with the virtual memory before.

Don't turn it off. With that much RAM I would set swap space to 1 or 2 GB - if you really need to save the disk space.

I don't need to, but I like to. Thanks, I set it to 3072MB which should be 3GB, but now it says I have 12.1 amount of Swap Memory. Is Swap Memory different from Virtual memory? I thought they were the same thing. On a plus side I got 10~GB more free space on my little Velociraptor, so thats nice.

Some utilities report Swap space + RAM as Virtual Memory. I suspect this is what it means (although why it says 12.1 rather than 15 I don't know - unless it's reporting unused Virtual Memory).

You might want to monitor your setup using Performance Monitor for a while just to check how much it actually uses.

I acutally figured out its from formatting the harddrive, it put some space on there made for swap, and I assume it was ~9gigs, so that would be why. Thanks anyway.
