Hello everyone, I know that is an ominous headline.
I'll start here.
I have a Dell T7400
Dual X5472.
26gb ram.

I installed a 2nd X5472 and sink, total investment 25 bucks.

After hours of reading everywhere I finally got the system to boot with both CPUs installed.
Here is what I did, updated the bios to A11, and msconfig->boot->Advanced->2 processors.
I did this with only one CPU and then shut down and restarted with both installed and it ran fine. I then read that clicked DETECT HAL should be checked for one bootup with both CPUs. So I did that as well.

Ok. So now here is where I stand.

Right click My computer-.Properties only shows one CPU.
However under device manager, open Processors it shows 8 distinct processors. ie cores.

I'm not entirely convinced everything is setup correctly. I'm reading a lot about updating the HAL file, but I have 4 of them, I have no idea which one and certainly don't want to mess anything up and brick this machine!

2 are version 6.0.6002.18005. However they are in different locations. Both installed same date and time. April 2009
One is System32(c:\windows)
one is hal.inf_6e4a7ef2(C:win\sys32\driverstore\filerepository

One is version is 6.0.6001.18000 installed Jan 2008
hal.inf_bafb150f(C:win\sys32\driverstore\filerepository

last one is
6.0.6000.16386 installed Nov 2006
hal.inf_8bcee68b(C:win\sys32\driverstore\filerepository

I'm sure some of you are saying, "MAN! I don't need all this info!" But it's easier to get all this out now, then to have someone ask and wait.

I went to run a test with Cinebech and it only shows 2 core 2 threads @3.00ghz. If that matters at all.

Thanks to everyone!

Ryan

I didn't though. It sold with one. Per the service tag from Dell.

well don't know ?? reason I asked was I see used ones like this and has 2 chips in it , but I see ''referbs'' that seem to just come with one chip in them??

so I was wondering if dell refurbished them buy removing the chip from a socket that went bad and just called it good ??

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-T7400-Dual-2x-Quad-Core-Xeon-X5472-3-00-Ghz-8-Core-16GB-RAM-Win10-/322046800731

I just don't see like a ''new'' t7400 that's speced or sole with just a single chip in it .. only the ones I see that's been ''refurbished '' ??

The place I got this machine from was a company I worked for and they closed their doors. They had 15 or 20 of these machines that they bought brand new in 09. Not one, that I know of, had dual CPU. It still had the plastic cover for the socket on the door.

maybe ?? just how I was seeing it .. seems odd you would buy something like that new prebuilt ready to go and just get one cpu in it -- comes down to whats the point then ??

don't know , like I said I cant find anything more on this then what I all ready posted on it

good luck

Well to add some content.
Linux live boot-will load all 8 cores and runs great.
I even made a live boot of Overclockers testing software and it will run all 8 cores for that as well. 6100 primes per second running all 8 cores at 100%

Thanks Junkey for the suggestion.

Precisely.
And yes it does say Vista Buisness supports 2.

Here's what I know to be true.
A lot of people said, it's the BIOS, The motherboard won't like it. The different steppings will not allow the two CPUs to work together.
However, Linux utilizes all those parts and processes to run. The only difference, like you said, is the OS.
Now...to see if Win7 will work. Might be disconnecting all but one of my HDD's and running a fresh install of 7 without wiping my vista drive. See how that works.

I have even stumped the Intel people, online anyway. I had to prove in their own literature where steppings between same CPUs do not matter.

Commercial servers, workstations, and other high-end PCs may have more than one physical processor. Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate allow for two physical processors, providing the best performance on these computers. Windows 7 Starter, Home Basic, and Home Premium will recognize only one physical processor.

good luck

Wow, you dug deep! However, note this:

Not all operating systems can support dual processors with mixed frequencies. Mixing
processors of different steppings but the same model (as per CPUID instruction) is
supported. Details regarding the CPUID instruction are provided in the AP-485 Intel®
Processor Identification and the CPUID Instruction application note.

Wonder if that's why Vista Business didn't want to run? I see you are planning to test with Win 7 - have you tried a clean install with Vista Business? Might still be a low-level type driver issue. I wonder.

However, I'm out. I don't really know more than I've already shared. Sorry if I lead you down a garden path.

Surprisingly it didn't take me long to find that. I was on overclockers and someone had a link for 5500 series. So I thought well there MUST be one for 5400.

That part of the spec is referencing frequencies, and these are the same freq. The stepping is rev level.

And no need to apologize, to be honest, when you said it wouldn't work, it makes me work harder to prove one way or the other. I love to research things and find out the truth, regardless of the outcome. Now I know for a fact they will work together, the hardware isn't an issue whether it be the cpus or motherboard, and BIOS functions well too. It could be very well like you said a low level drive situation. That's why I brought up HAL at the very beginning of this thread.

Maybe a fresh install might do it as well...

Anyway, the mission is still on.

Yeah that's the problem, I'm building this machine for video editing. Adobe premier pro, after affects and such. I can't run those programs on Linux, so I have to make this work. I have to say your suggestion was top notch. I recommend that overclockers live iso as well. That does have some nice options when live booting.

So now I keep two usb's ready one with linux one for overclockers.

I have seen some talk about getting cs5 to run. To be honest, I have so much time and experience in the adobe suite, I'd rather learn to build a patch on win7, if needed, to make these work together than learn a new editing software. At least then I can say I can do that too! lol
But like I said earlier, I don't give up on these things easy. There has to be a way, fix, patch, something. I'm not the only one who has done this.

just get a cheap extra hard drive and install Linux and get there stuff and just play around on it in some spare time you may be surprised and feel '' why did I not do this years ago ''

you just don't fully know until you go and do it and may end up liking it best over all ??

thing is its free to try and use not pay 100's to see its not up to par . just uninstall it and get another editor program and give it a whirl
