I just built a new comp and installed vista 64. When running DVDmaker, vista only uses about 30% of the CPU when encoding. I tried increasing the priority of the program to High and it made no difference. I would like to speed things up so that it encodes faster and fully utilize the power of my system. I have not tried any other CPU intensive programs yet. So, what can I do to fully utilize all of the CPU? I feel like I just built a race car but can only push down the gas peddle half way.

List all your specs. We can't assume to know what CPU you're using, let alone the rest of the system.

Most of the time the amount of load on the CPU depends on the application, not the OS. Some programs can only use one or two cores, others can use 4 cores and some can use as many as you throw at them (still fairly rare outside of video editing/encoding and 3D modelling programs).

Here you go:
CPU = I7 920 OC to 3.6gHz
Mem = 12Gbit 1600 OCZ
GPU = 2X GTX 260 OC
Power = 1100W
OS = Vista 64bit

Please let me know if you require any firther info. When I ran Win DVD Maker on myold rig (E6600 core dou) it would max out the CPU trying to get the job done. For some reason this one won't use the power it has. Your help is appriciated.

Open up task manager when encoding and check how many threads (logical "cores") are being used. My guess is you'll see 2 heavily loaded and a small amount of load distributed across the remaining six. This basically means that Win DVD Maker is only capable of using two threads efficiently, which in the case of the E6600 is all you have, whereas i7 has 8.

True, some software is not capable of using all of the cores of the processor. I don't know much about Win DVD Maker, but Vegas (by Sony) will distribute processes over all of the cores to maximize performance. Other high-end video editing software will do the same. Try a different software package or wait for Microsoft to update (patch) Win DVD Maker.
