I'd like to upgrade my PC so I can go from my 1080 monitor to a 1440 monitor. I play non-competitive games like RPGs so color and immersion are most important. With everything so expensive I just want to see if I am upgrading the right things:

As you increase resolution, the CPU side of things becomes less critical as you become more GPU bound.

I think you could probably get away with keeping your existing CPU and Motherboard and just upgrade the GPU and screen - especially if you are looking for high quality visuals rather than high frame rates.

The 8400 is still pretty good for modern titles imo.

You want a set of 2x8GB 3200mhz CL16 RAM, not 3000mhz.

I agree with this. It should still give very stable fps for non competitive gaming. You can maybe go up in gpu performance.

I had no idea - thank you! I'll upgrade the video card now and then put off the CPU/motherboard for another year or two.
