I'm in the process of building a machine for my brother who is newbie.
I want to get a 20 gig HD for him but I can't decide whether to get a
Western Digital or the Maxtor-Quantum Fireball.lct20.

I've never had a quantum or a Maxtor, always WD but people are saying
that Maxtors are now better. So thats my delimma.

Maybe you can help me decide.

I'd go with Quantum/Maxtor over WD anyday.

I would go Maxtor also, but I wouldn't go with the Quantum's LCT 20. I would probably look more in the lines of a drive from the Diamond Max Plus 60 series, D540X series, or the D740X series.

Me too, I trust WD enough to go with them again. Hehe, I need to anyway, to setup my RAID.

Thanks for the input, I ended buying another WD. I've had such good luck
with WD that I couldn't turn down a good deal that I got at the Market Pro
Computer Show on a 20 G. If the WD that I now have on my machine goes, I may
replace it with a Maxtor, but until then I guesss I'll use the WD. I've never
had a WD crash or go down. I've had 4 of them.

Thanks,

I've seen at least 6 wd's of them fail, but i've also seen 2 quantum's fail. I haven't seen any new wd's fail. I have the LCT20 40gb 4500rpm not 5400rpm but 4500rpm it is extremely slow.

I don't know who's spreading the rumor that WD's are more likely to fail than other drives? All Crashman said was that WD's warranty polices are not as good as Maxtor and the others.

I meant that that's my personal experience not that i think they're more likely to fail. It's just from my experience the old WD's fail more. I dont know about the new ones.

I would say if you went with the Maxtor/Quantum D740X series of drives that it would be the quietest drive because it has the Hydro Dynamic Bearing.
