Hello,

I'm super stressed right now as this hard drive is old, probably 15 years or 10. Anyhow it was working fine today until I unplugged it and switched it to a different usb slot. I've been using it for years on end with no issues until now. I have 300GB of private / family / important stuff on this drive as I wasn't anticipating something like this randomly happening.

Now anytime I plug it in it just causes Windows to hang... I try to do recovery options but it freezes that application and does not appear in the list.

I can give some information to save repeated solutions.

1. It Appears In Device Manager:

2. It appears in My Computer:
http://gyazo.com/3872ddb0f1414cc7bca9f19e2201c281

3. If I try to use Disk Management or any program of the sort it just doesn't allow the program to load:

4. I tried uninstalling all types of USB devices installed and restarting the computer.

5. I tried using the HDD in a different computer but still doesn't work

6. I tried switching USB Cords, 5 different ones, Also tried using different usb hubs... i.e : usb 2.0 / 3.0

7. Tried using different operating systems 7/8

8. I can't do anything to modify the drive, can't click format, or view it's properties

9. Tried using all CHKDSK types

10. It's clearly readable: http://gyazo.com/d7098e0ef6e09844e4decba576be35cb but only after I unplug it will it notify you that it was there...

I tried everything.

I think I know what the problem is but I can't access the drive to delete the file. I installed a drive today and used that drive as the download path.. It's not a big drive or anything it's just for my Huion 420 Tablet, but everything seemed to happen after this.

Am I screwed? Did I lose all my precious stuff? I feel really down right now as a lot of that stuff is important and I'm really sad right now so I don't know how to feel.

Hi again, jorda13456!

I'm sorry for the late reply. I took some time off and couldn't respond on time. However, I'm very glad to hear that you've successfully recovered your files! :)
Either way, the errors from the tests indicate quite the corruption on the HDD, so I'd suggest you to start looking for a replacement and be very careful with the data storage on that portable drive if it's still usable. Make sure you always do backups and have your files stored on at least two different locations (storage devices). This is the best way to avoid such mini heart attacks in the future. 😀

Best of luck!

No it's not, it's on my C drive.

The Portable Hard drive only used to hold files.

the operating system unfreezes as soon as i unplug it...

Hello there, jorda13456!

I'm very sorry to hear about your WD portable drive causing you such headaches. 🙁 You definitely did a good job with the troubleshooting though. Now, my suggestion would be to test the external HDD's health and SMART status using WD's Data LifeGuard diagnostics. It will help us determine what kind of damage we are dealing with here. Make sure you run both the QUICK and the EXTENDED test from the tool: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=IjnXih
I strongly recommend you keep your data on more than 1 storage device (as a back up solution), this is the best way to avoid the headaches of data loss! :/

Keep me posted with the test results!

Any type of recovery program causes the drive to make the programs freeze up until i unplug the drive.

I got it to load but it took a while before it did:

test failed after a while

2 Years later, I have a WD drive showing similar issues... One file I try to transfer, it freezes 3/4th the way through. The file works perfectly when used, but if trying to copy/cut anything, it will freeze at 68-75%....

Please do share, how did you solve it, how did you get everything back comeback kid? 🙂
