What are "services"?

Since I'm one of the people who find benefit in XP (having only used 98 and 98SE [never NT/W2K]), I am unfamiliar with "services"... I've heard them mentioned from time to time, but don't really understand them. Would anyone be so kind to tell me a little about them?

Also, I read somewhere that someone turned off the Nvidia services, Why?

Services are programs that perform a specific function and are often used to support other programs/applications (e.g. the print spooler service manages printing for programs like Word etc). They usually work at a low level(close to hardware).

So why would someone turn off the Nvidia service in XP? I know there seems to be some conflict with Nvidia/XP/Via, but would turning off the service help?

It's a useless service. Disabling it will certainly speed up the shutdown process ... but it won't fix any conflicts.
