What Are the Memory Limits of Windows 8?

With the continuous decreasing cost of computer hardware, people nowadays prefer purchasing high-end computers to experience increased performance, and speed up the processing. Considering this, Microsoft designed and developed Windows 8 in such a way that it has increased memory limits. Increased memory limits allow Windows 8 to support more physical memory i.e. RAM, allowing the computer to work faster, and to keep up with increasing requirements of software and gaming developments.

Like all other operating systems, even Windows 8 comes in 3 flavors namely Windows 8 Pro, Windows 8 Enterprise, and Windows 8 Standard, and each flavor comes in both 32-bit (x86) and 64-bit (x64) editions. The table given below clearly explains the maximum physical memory ( RAM) supported by each flavor of Windows 8:

Version 32-bit (x86) 64-bit (x64)
Windows 8 Standard 4GB 128GB
Windows 8 Pro 4GB 512GB
Windows 8 Enterprise 4GB 512GB

Many times it is important to understand the memory limits of an operating system, including Microsoft Windows 8, in order to assess and deploy a computer for appropriate uses.

Whatsoever the case may be, it is quite important for the administrators to know the version and edition of Windows 8 operating system before they plan to purchase appropriate physical memory (RAM) to increase the performance of the OS.

What Version and Edition of Windows 8 Do I Have?
In order to know if a Windows 8 computer is Standard, Enterprise or Pro, and is of 32-bit or 64-bit edition, users or administrators must follow the step-by-step instructions given as below:

■Click Desktop tile from the Start screen to go to the desktop window.
■Once on the desktop screen, click File Explorer icon from the taskbar.

■On the same window, under System section, view the information about the type of Windows 8 edition opposite to the System type label.
■Under the same section, view the physical memory available on the system opposite to the Installed memory (RAM) label.

Note: This information might change as per the available hardware and operating system installed in the system. Figures of ‘Installed memory’ label will be modified automatically when the physical memory of the system is upgraded.
