iv'e decided my next pc will be based on intel conroe e3300 cpu.
iv'e noticed two major chipsets compatible with this cpu:
intel 945 and 965. boards based on 945 appear in manufacturers conroe compabilty list, and they are much chipper than 965 bords.
will a 945 board downscale the conroe, and the pc overall performance, in comparecnt to 965 or any other platform?

i'm not much of an overclocker or gamer, but i would like my machine to be able to encode files fast and allow me to play when i wish.
so feel free toss other options in.

thank you all

P965 and P975 are the best so far especailly when it comes to OCing. But you can also use P945. Do you need links to motherboards with these sets?
EDIT: I forgot to ask what price range are you looking at and what features do you want?

It seems to me your on a budget, which would make me assume that a decent P5B mobo would be fine. If you wanted even cheaper, you could consider the Asrock 775-VSTA mobo, which had some decent performance for the price. Otherwise, 965 wise, P5B, AB9 Pro, or DS3 are your best bets.

the best budget-performance you can get is a combine of e6300 & gigabyte-965p-ds3 (around $140-60). but if you are really on a budget, you can scale down your motherboard to asrock conroe945g-dvi just below $100.

here's the asrock review:

i was using e6300 and asrock775dual-vsta (via chipset) and running fine for two weeks then i upgrade to e6600 and still running fine. if you're not go into any overclocking, all chipset that support core 2 duo processor should be fine, but first check the reviews on some sites and compared to real life performance from people using the chipset, afterward decide what to purchase. 😛

hope this may help you out. goodluck..
