What Is AMD's Equivalent To Intel's Pentium D?

Just a question on my mind. I couldn't find any benchmarks what so ever in Google.

I'm looking for a AMD's Equivalent To the Pentium D 930 (Which was 3.2Ghz - 4MB Cache - 65nm.)

Pentium D's were never good, they ran hot and were based off older architecture. Closest equivalent is probably one of the older Athlon X2's but im not sure why would would be looking for one of them these days, when the Athlon II's are out and are a hell of a lot better.

well my pentium D 925 ran at 40 deg cel at idle and never went above 60 playing games. Im going to use it again building my mrs a media center pc and cant afford a new cpu

I'd say it was about equivalent to an Athlon 64 X2 4400+ maybe. The Pentium D's weren't good at all.

The amds are all socket 939. But even the x2 3800+ traded blows with the 930. That would probably be closest from the few benchmarks in the article.

I hope this is to settle a bet and not shopping research!

A low end Athlon X2 from years ago. Pentium D was a terrible processor.

An Athlon X2 clock for clock is about 40- 50% faster than a Pentium D.
So, an Athlon X2 running at 1.8ghz would be about on par with your Pentium D running at 3.2ghz.

Pentuim D's were a late effort from Intel to get a dual core processor on the market against the Athlon X2. They simply sandwiched 2 old p4's onto one piece of silicone in a last ditch effort to keep the old outdated P4 type processors going a little longer until they could answer (and soundly best) the Athlon X2's with Conroe.

During this stage of processor development, Intel was relying on the fact that the only thing most people knew about processors was "I want one of dem dar kumpooters with Intel pendelum Processor cause they are da best kind of chips"

And thus, a lot of people paid good money for a slow outdated processor that any AMD X2 of the era would simply mop the floor with.

Stop sheepling. before I sold it 8 months ago, it would handle GTA IV with 35FPS+ @ 1280x1024 Medium settings with the 8800GT.)

The answer to your question depends upon the criteria. If you mean AMD dual core with about the same performance, the answer is the Athlon X2 3600. It came in 2 versions. A windsor core (90nm) which ran at 2.0 Ghz with 256k of L2 cache per core, and a brisbane core (65nm) at 1.9 GHz but with 512 L2 cache per core.

They are almost identical in overall performance, though they have different strengths and weaknesses.

Why would you upgrade to a dead end socket 775 cpu?

Depends. Sometimes you can get PhII and motherboard for the same price if not less than some yorkfields. Not to mention the huge possibility that his E8600 will not work in his wife's current motherboard (unless it is a of a newer chipset.)

4 years ago i started with a Pentium D 925 in an asrock Dual motherboard initally useing some parts out of my oll dell p4, agpx8 graphics card and ddr400 ram. << cheap
I did go to town on the case buying a Antec 900 they had just come out at the time and the Jeantec psu i thought was good quality and would last a few upgrades.

then when i had some spare money
upgraded the to a XFX 680i LT & 2x XFX 7600GT Fatal1ty 256Mb g/cards, and ddr2 ram, << at the time cheap under £300 and a vast inprovement

next again when i could afford i bought the E8600 (so yes it will work in the 680ilt)and the raptor.

Most recently less than a year ago i bought the
790i Ultra and the 2x GTX250's direct from XFX for less than £260, << Again a vast inprovement
i also managed to get my antec 1200 and the 1800mhz ddr3 with my xmas money. Ending up with the following rig.

Antec 1200, E8600, XFX 790 Ultra, 4Gb OCZ 1800Mhz DDR3 (2x2),2x XFX 1024mb GTX250's, 320GB WD V,Raptor, Jeantec 650W articool Modular, XP pro 64bit.

Never spending more than £300-400 at any one time i dont think i have done bad. you cant tell me i can go out and get a i3/i5/i7 bassed pc for £300-400 that will play games as good as my rig.
AND i can use my cast offs to buid other pc's

I had a 925, well still do, it's just retired now.

It was my first "capable" processor. (I came from an 850Mhz Amd Duron, so yes the Pentium D blew it's doors off)

The ONLY thing that made me upgrade was bloated Team Fortress 2 that even stressed my E2220 to unplayable levels, only my E8200@3.2GHz can play it well enough out of all my listed processors.

I loved that Pentium D and that whole computer was a gift from my father as he promised if he EVER had enough money at one time to buy me a new pc he would, and he did.

My Pentium D will stay as a reminder of a promise from my father and all the awesome times I had with it.

I would throw it in a spare rig but I currently have an E2180 and E2220 in the spare rigs and they beat it (although barely) in performance and greatly beat it in power consumption so there is no point in using my Pentium D at this time.
