Is this a version that only works in The UK and Europe?..........Can a PAL
Version XBOX work in Canada?

We got dicked by buying a PAL version Halo1..............we are in
Canada......it wont operate on my son's crystal version xbox. The seller
said that it works fine if you have a PAL: version xbox.....how would he
know if he is in Canada as well?

PAL is the video standard used in most of Europe. North America and Japan
use NTSC.

You might be able to get the game to play on your XBox if you get a
PAL->NTSC convertor, but I've heard they're somewhat expensive - certainly
more expensive than just going to the store an buying a copy of Halo there.

Meanwhile, if you can't return the version you got, put it on eBay. Just
be sure to make the buyer responsible for shipping!

YES

...........Can a PAL

It will work in Canada, but unless you have the right kind of electrical
outlets, PAL games, and a multisystem TV, it won't do much good.

Be careful. Check for NTSC on the spine of the game case before buying
(usually at the bottom.)

I don't know how he knows, but you need to get your money back by any means
necessary.

Maybe because he got a PAL xbox? Maybe he moved over from Europe
recently and brought the xbox there and it took it with him. Consoles
don't have GPS or something like that. If you got a multisystem tv and a
transformer to supply the right voltage to the console, consoles from
other regions work without problems in other regions. I'm living in
Germany, a PAL country, and I know several people including using
imported NTSC consoles from the US or Japan here.

I don't know the exact text of the auction, but I don't think you got
dicked, you just didn't read the auction text carefully enough. I would
suggest a kind mail to the seller asking him if he could send you the
money paid for the game, not for the shipping back when you send the
game back.

It can (with some hassle like needing a stepup transformer and a
multisystem tv), and it isn't sold there.

The consoles are region locked. A PAL->NTSC convertor wouldn't help. You
would need a real PAL console or get the XBox chipped.

There are two video formats:

NTSC in North America and Japan
PAL in Europe, South America and a few others.

They operate at different rates so, for example, you can't take a PAL
video tape and play it on an NTSC VCR and vice versa.

The same goes for video games.

There probably is a way to do it through some kind of hardware
modification on the Xbox, but you'd be better off selling it on EBay to
someone living in a PAL country.

you didn't get dicked, if the seller specifically wrote: PAL version of the
game then he gave you all the information that you needed. If you didn't
know what PAL meant, its unfortunately your fault, it is up to you the buyer
to do your research before you place a bid.... the seller even gave you
extra information by pointing out the "(UK)" in the auction.

Live and learn eh?, at least now you know that games have region locks and
only NTSC games will work on your son's console. BTW, this is true for the
PS2 and cube as well, but not true for handheld consoles AFAIK.

Don't forget SECAM, which I think is used in Russia.

Actually thats not a good example, most vcr in australia where I am are
"ntsc" compatible for playback, but are pal units.

You are absolutely correct in that for games, speaking from experience🙁.

I don't want it:)
